Recently after mixing up 更 and 便, I have been wondering about other kanji similar to another that I have burned before the visually similar kanji showed up. And doing reviews slow enough might feel kind of cheating, since I might not have anything to mistake some of the kanji with. Would return of previously burned item to check against current similar one be an option?

It would be an option, but I don’t think it is neccessary. If you get a new kanji, which is visually similar to something you already burned you’ll either remember the new one or mix it up with the old one, which will then lead you to (hopefully) think to youself: “Wait, why was this wrong?”, which will lead you to realize that you have a similar kanji already burned.
