[Browser Extension] WaniKani Kanji Highlighter 2021

I loved the extension. But the blacklist feature isn’t working for me. I think cothalir meant to say the same thing. I’m on Vivaldi, though

here’s the proof. It shows that the page is blacklisted, but it still isn’t blocking

Thank you for the feedback, I’m glad you are enjoying the extension.
It is definitely a weird behaviour because you shouldn’t have to blacklist wanikani.com in the first place (the highlighter shouldn’t be able to run in any page of Wanikani, even if not blacklisted).
Does this issue happen when you blacklist other pages?

I didn’t try that, the only page that I had blacklisted was wanikani because it was bothering me. I’ll try to reproduce the bug because the extension isn’t working on wanikani now, it seems to be intermittent

I was doing my lessons normally, and after a while the extension started working on wanikani again. I pressed the right arrow key to go to the next page (Meaning to the reading page) and the extension activated. I did 15 lessons and I was reading the second word of the series of 5

Refreshed the page and the extension isn’t working now, but it’s kind of annoying to refresh every time (it’s okay on the lessons page but if I do it on reviews, it doesn’t show all the mistakes in the summaries)

I see, thank you for warning me about this issue.
I will look into it right away and try and fix it as soon as possible.
And sorry for the inconvenience the extension is causing!

It’s okay, thank you for your attention. The extension is great, I was very surprised when I found out that it works even with YouTube subtitles

Really cool addon but a couple of bug reports.

First is that it’s making the search magnifying glass button on wanikani dashboard page disappear for me. The one between the ‘help’ link and the user account options/avatar button. I use the latest version of firefox. Disabling your addon makes it reappear.

Also, as other users have mentioned there appears to be a bug that occurs where the addon enables itself while reviewing items. It seems to happen most reliably when I open a page like twitter - realise I shouldn’t be doomscrolling and get back to studying - then close the tab before it fully loads. So say within 0.5 of opening a site. This seems to happen for me every time I try it on any site that takes a short while to completely load. Waiting several seconds before closing the tab seems to not trigger the issue.

I’m glad you like the extension!
Thank you for the feedback.

Found the issue with the magnifying glass, thanks for pointing it out!

The other bug, from what you are saying it looks like that using other sites trigger the extension on blacklisted sites. I will keep looking into it.

This is really handy! Would you have any plans for releasing a safari extension that could work on an iPad?

Thank you for saying that!
I will definitely look into it, and see if I can make it!

Absolutely brilliant, thanks a lot for this. Will come very handy.

Perhaps what I have found a tad bit problematic was that if I wish to look up the particular Kanji in the extension further by scrolling down there(the enlarged window on the right side) it can get quite tricky to get there since as it works on hovering; before I move my mouse there I will end up with a different Kanji(because in order to move my mouse there I often times have to go over the other Kanji and vice-versa back, although you can lock a Kanji once there, which is great).
Maybe providing an option to open the look-up by clicking on a Kanji(can be a problem if clicking on a link though, in that case by providing configurable hotkeys for locking the Kanji or the like) instead of hovering over it, or something else to counter this tiny “issue” would be welcome.

Otherwise, it is truly brilliant for now, with some other tools like Yomichan it is much easier for me to practice reading and comprehension, thanks a lot again

I’m very happy that the extension is being of help!
Thank you for the feedback!

Right now, you can click ‘L’ on your keyboard to lock the kanji and prevent it from changing when hovering over other kanji in the page. I might add, in the future, other ways to make it easier to navigate the page and don’t lose the kanji.
Your idea of clicking the kanji instead of hovering is a good one, I’ll keep that in mind.

Oh, I see, so there is a hotkey, now that is brilliant then. I did not realise, is probably even better since clicking would not be possible with links. Thanks a lot, then that solves the issue completely  Thank you for the quick response. In case I find something else, I will report.

Have a great rest of the day.

Just found your extension. After I did something REALLY SIMPLE (Opening a Wanikani tab from kanji or vocabulary from selected text on a page)
Nevertheless you give a quick no frills access to the single kanji.
My thingie can select multiple kanji and perhaps access the Wanikani data in this case with lesser clicks than you.
Now, what could be the iceing on the cake? Selecting the stem of a verb and some magic adds the su or ru and shows the Wanikani entry in the vocabs?
Great work! :+1:

Could you have a look at e.g. HIRAGANA TIMES | Japanese learning magazine: History, Culture, Society, Economy
With highlighter I get multiple kanji vertically aligned. Not that this is a showstopper. Just something I naticed today.

Unfortunately it does happen sometimes on some websites, and it is because of the way some information is displayed. I have tried to fix it before but I don’t seem to find any viable solution, for which I apologize! If it is affecting your experience on that specific website, you can always blacklist it on the extension.
Thank you for your feedback and I hope that other features might compensate for that issue!

Just some ideas
The mouseover for single kanji is really fast. What about showing the information not in a popup but in an additional browers tab? Just reuse it for the next kanji. Like in GoogleTranslate a translate tab in another browser window is reused for the next translation of a selection?
For selecting multiple kanji: If the selection is done and the mouse leaves it open the corresponding WK vocabulary in a popup/tab?

I think your app has some interesting ideas besides its Wanikani features.
Do you maintain it on Github? In August I will sort of retire which means I could give some features I like a shot. Even if my last serious work with Javascript and Browsers was 25 years ago. But alas in the end all programming languages have similar features. Even if there are some outliers :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
