Book/Manga Thread (What are you reading?)

No, haven’t seen it yet. Is it good?

No, it’s trash, haha. Watched maybe two minutes of it.

oh, wait… I thought Hand Shakers were an original. Maybe it’s not the same

The anime is still trash, but I decided to watch it anyway.

I’ll give the art a pass, at least. Bright colors all abound and interesting visual movement I hadn’t really seen before.

The plot is meh.
The characters are alright.
The characters’ lines are cliche af.
The music is alright.

So yeah. It’s just an anime to watch just for the heck of it.

Noted, I don’t watch much in the way of anime, but I’ll keep it in mind.

Looks like the same, the anime synopsis and what on the back of the book are similar.

Weird, MAL says it’s an original

Main character is something like Tadzuna (probably translated to something else) and gets a request from a college research institute? I think it’s the same.

I just got Count of Monte Cristo. Looking forward to it, although I had a tough time getting through 3 Musketeers. Kind of a slog.

I agree with The Three Musketeers, I read the first one a long time ago and haven’t bothered with the other ones yet just because they’re so slow. I mean, they’re good, and really well written, but they’re far from the same level as The Count of Monte Cristo.

Aw I loved every minute of The Three Musketeers. Only in part because it gave birth to Dogtanian and the Muskehounds haha.

I picked up The Count of Monte Cristo a few years ago because I’d heard such good things about it, and somehow haven’t gotten around to it. Soon!

I read Count of Monte Cristo first then Muskateers and I think Count of Monte Cristo kind of spoiled me. It was so good that there was no way Muskateers could compete and I also found it a bit of a slog. (Plus maybe it was unable to live up to Dogtanian as well.)

I love that you can get these books for like £1. I only started reading classics because when I was travelling I didn’t have money to buy shiny, new novels and would buy The Brothers Karamasov or whatever purely due to the fact it was both cheap and huge and would keep me occupied for a long time. Ended up loving most of them and I find most classics are far more accessible than you’d think. Especially Dumas - parts of Monte Cristo are like a Dan Brown page turner (except Dumas can actually write).

Please have my children

Okay. Pop them on a plane and I’ll go pick them up at the airport.

I actually read the book first. Then found Dogtanian on Youtube. Then started to sing the theme song constantly, everywhere. At the age of 23.

Probably no one needed to know that about me

I’m reading a lot of things right now in Japanese

猛禽ちゃん
からかい上手の高木さん
現代魔女の就職事情
この音とまれ!
僕だけがいない街:Re (the extra volume they released)

I’m waiting for some space in the budget right now to continue, but I’m also reading the novels:

アウトブレイク・カンパニー
櫻子さんの足下には死体が埋まっている

It is the spring time of my Japanese studies, never read so much. ^-^

I loved the 僕だけがいない街 anime. And Sakurako-san. That was friggin excellent. I bet the books are lovely.

Me:

  • English - just finished reading the Ex Machina comics. Loved the series, frickin hated the ending, personally. I have Y: The Last Man, but haven’t started reading it yet. I read various BL mangas and doujins in English as well.
  • Japanese - 暁のヨナ is on hold, but will return to it in a few months. 夏目友人帳 was definitely above my level so will be on hold probably longer than Akatsuki. Also the art was jarring so it didn’t help my motivation, exactly. I have three random mangas that all seem way too high level for me and probably won’t even try them until like level 40, idk. Various BL doujins in Japanese.

I think you should try even it seems above your level. Some challenge is good some times.
Sakurako-san looked hard, but it was surprisingly easy, so you cannot judge the book by the cover.

Try which? For Akatsuki, I struggled with volume 12 and just couldn’t read volume 13. For Natsume, I struggled with and couldn’t sufficiently read volumes 1 and 2 (I think that’s all I have). And this was around level 30, but maybe a little sooner. (I reset my level.)

I really need to increase my overall vocabulary, because I read volumes 1 - 3 of Yotsuba&! early on in my WK with ease, and then (and likely still) couldn’t read volume 4 based on some “easy” vocabulary - bugs, animals, fruits, foods, I guess daily life sorta lists of vocab.
