Today I learned the word 用心棒 and the reading made me think of the movie Yojimbo (which tbf I haven’t seen, only seen the title referred to in memes) and it’s the exact same kanji!! I had no idea that’s what it was about I thought the dude was just named Yojimbo :sob:

One I had recently is that シャーペン is an abbreviation. Mechanical pencils aren’t “sharpens” but シャープペンシルs because they don’t need to be sharpened. That makes so much more sense.

Usually when I see the full word for something that’s normally abbreviated used in novels, I get a little annoyed (especially when they do it every single time, like, that’s too long, I don’t wanna read that!), but this time I was glad for it lol

I’ve just realized that dojo is 道場(どうじょう) trunky_rolling

I’ve known that word since forever and I’ve known those kanji for quite a while, but it never occured to me that they are used in that word! And it makes purrfect sense too! trunky_rolling

I realize I’m replying to an ancient post, but I think it’s called 数独 すどくbecause each digit can only appear once. You’re right that it has nothing to do with Germany!

The only problem with this one is now when I read 企画, I have to make sure I don’t screw up and mistake the reading as 計画, because whenever I read the word plan/see kanji that mean plan, I always hear “all according to keikaku!” in my head :sob:

A way is to make you see 企業(きぎょう) when talking about 企画(きかく), because 企業(きぎょう) isn’t 計算(けいさん).
