Beginner noun1のnoun2

Hi,

In Genki 1, p. 43, it introduces

noun1のnoun2

Their first example raises a question…

たけしさんのでんわばんごう

Why isn’t there a の betweenでんわ and ばんごう?As in:

たけしさんのでんわのんごう

Effectively, this would be:

noun1のnoun2のnoun3

Thanks for any pointers.

Short answer, because it’s a single word

Long answer: A lot of the time, when two words are strongly connected, there won’t be a の between them. It’s very similar to how English does it, since even there, it’s not a “number of someone’s phone”, it’s “phone number” or “house number” instead of “the number of the house”. In these cases the two words merge into one and form essentially a single word.
