Has anyone had trouble with the dictation sections of this app throwing words at you you don’t know? At first i thought it covered everything in the basic lessons or in the examples but i’m getting questions about halfway through N5 with words i can’t find trace of earlier. Should i just come back to this when i’ve learned more vocab?
Well what’s the difference between Bunpro and Bunpo?
They’re totally separate products! Bunpo is friendlier and cheaper but app-only, Bunpro is pricier and has less in the way of lessons but better hints and maybe easier SRS? I haven’t really used the latter much.
Did I miss something? App is still named Bunpo. Just has “Learn Japanese” attached to it to attract people that probably wouldn’t know “bunpo” comes from the Japanese word for grammar.
App Store says Bunpo is 8.49€ monthly and 20.49€ annual…while bunpro is 30$ annual (I don’t remember the monthly) so it’s not cheaper at the moment?
Where are you seeing that? I remember only having to pay $30 for lifetime access to Bunpo.
Yea it says 20 annual and 33 for the lifetime, meaning it’s a one time fee. It just seems the app store doesn’t mention that.
But that’s a screenshot from the AppStore. And you have a monthly fee also of about 8.50 Euro, so I believe it’s not cheaper than bunpro which is 3$ for monthly and 30$ for annual.
While For lifetime is cheaper bunpo with 33€
Ah my bad. I haven’t handled the app store in a long time. It depends on how long you plan to use the service. It’s not cheaper monthly but it’s far cheaper for the lifetime. In general you’d be better off getting the lifetime license for Bunpo since 33 for something like this isn’t too bad of a value and it’ll pay for itself after 4 months if paying monthly and less than 2 if paying annual (Which does seem disproportionate to me). While the lifetime for BunPro is $150.
the JLPT N5 portion is locked and forces for a monthly subscription at the very least. Maybe this is only with the iOS version, but it is definitely not entirely free.
I’ve been using Bunpo, but I can’t seem to get the SRS function to work. I’m using Android, so has that still not been implemented?
I just paid for the lifetime access… I really liked the feel of the app in the early free lessons and I thought that the explanations for some of the grammar points were better-written and clearer than many textbooks or websites I’ve looked at in the past.
No idea if it covers “ALL” of the grammar points, since that seems to be in doubt by some here. Hopefully it’s not missing too many. For some reason, I don’t have trouble learning kanji and I’ve never had much trouble getting the feel for the grammar in other languages, but I have a really hard time making Japanese grammar stick. So maybe this will help.
I actually like the handwriting version better. I just added “Japanese” to my regular keyboard languages. To change between keyboards, I click on the globe icon at the bottom of the keyboard.
Looks like they hid the majority of their content behind a pay wall now on Android as well. At least N5 used to be completely for free not long ago. Good for the developers that they started earning money, but I can’t justify another subscription at the moment. Will look around the playstore for free alternatives, if anyone has recommendations let me know please!
