[Android] Mina – A Modern Android App

The left most button you see during reviews.

I love the app very much. But the self-study section, which I was using to review things I hadn’t seen in a couple months, has disappeared. It showed up in the recent mistakes section, which is also missing. I cant find it in any menu. It seems like self-study by level/srs stage shouldn’t be dependent on having recent errors (though it will inevitably show up again next level when i start missing items again). Am I just overlooking it?

Thank you! The self-study has a few presets. If you are talking about the recent mistakes then yes, it only allows you do that when you actually miss some items during your reviews.

Hey there,

I just wanted to say thanks for creating this app. It’s awesome, and I’m having a blast using it!

I was wondering if there was a way to add a feature that would show the Onyomi readings in Katakana? Thank you so much! I hope you have a wonderful day.

Thank you for your appreciation. Really glad it has been an awesome app to you and that you are enjoying it. The feature is doable and could be added as a setting a user can control.

I think it will be great, just like you said it would. Thank you so much!

hello, new to wk here, and i’ve been using mina from the start of level 1 mostly because i like the push notifications reminding me to do reviews. however, i noticed as i reached guru on radicals and started unlocking kanji, that mina is not syncing lessons for some reason? when i have new lessons ready i can only access them on the website, while mina will simply say 0 lessons. my reviews have been syncing promptly and flawlessly the whole time. is this a bug? can i do anything to fix it? thank you

Could you check your Recommended Daily Lessons count in settings. Maybe it is set to 0. Let me know what you find. Thanks!

oh, yes, that is exactly what happened. thanks! i don’t remember changing that before, does the app default this setting to zero?

No, it doesn’t but there could be a reason for that. It could be that the onboarding process wasn’t done properly. Other than that, I can’t think of anything else. It shouldn’t happen again though once you set it to your desired value.

hi again, just here to report another strange issue. after my last post, seeing and starting lessons was working fine for me, until i unlocked my first vocabulary, and then i started getting “unknown error occured” when trying to begin the next lesson. this time, it was easily resolved: i needed to do the first batch of lessons on the website, (presumably) because of the unique popup dialogue that explained how vocabulary lessons work. after that, i was able to keep doing lessons in the mina app…

… that is, until i reached level 2, and suddenly the lessons button kept throwing the same vague error every time, no matter what i tried. (reviews, for what it’s worth, have never had any such issue since i started.) things i attempted while troubleshooting included:

  • doing the first batch on web again - no luck
  • making sure all of my app settings matched the ones on the wk website (i did give my api token permission to write preferences to my account, but they were still not syncing)
  • resyncing the cache from the app settings. multiple times.
  • signing out of the app, revoking my api token, making a new one, and relogging to mina ((at this point, for some reason, the app was no longer able to successfully sync the cache anymore…?))
  • forcefully clearing all of the app’s stored data in my phone’s settings and going thru the out-of-box experience again

this last item finally resolved the issue. ultimately it was a minor inconvenience, but i wanted to document my troubleshooting in case it can help identify the internal issue. i also put a screenshot of the error message i was getting, just in case it’s somehow relevant despite having no real information about the error lol

thanks for working on the app, btw  i appreciate that the user experience is very close to that of the website, while providing the imo essential features of push notification and proper keyboard hinting

Thanks for reporting this. If you come across this again just pull to refresh before starting lessons and see if it resolves it.
This could be from stale items in the lesson queue that did not get removed after the data sync completed fetching new items.

Hi, am I doing something wrong??

In the settings I put Review ordering on “Lower SRS stages first”

But when I start doing my reviews it gives me lots of Enlightened words. As a workaround I put it in Apprentice Fist, that seems to work, but when I’m done with those I get the higher stages again.

Also, regularly when doing my reviews the app just only asks either the meaning of a word or the spelling. I can do about 20 or so words one after another only answering one of those two questions. Only when I push the ‘10 words icon’ do words come back for the second part of the review.

Are the items in your review queue only enlightened upwards?

That seems to be the expected behaviour because of the shuffling algorithm used.

No I have about 360+ reviews open ranging from apprentice all the way to enlightened.

I just used the setting “lower levels first” that does seem to give me also Guru words.

And about the expected behaviour, when using wanikani’s own site for reviews it usually gives 4/6 words untill it asks the second review question instead of 20+.

The implementation I employed is different from the website so they can’t give the same result.

For the other issue, I will look into it.

Thank you for looking into it. I really do like the app. It helps getting the reviews done much faster.

One last thing that I noticed.

What does this pop-up mean?

I sometimes have to answer a review on a specific word twice, and afterwards I get this pop-up.

That is not a normal behaviour and I have never come across that. My guess is something in the cache is corrupted or the app is corrupted. Could you try uninstalling and reinstalling? Before you do that, clear the data and cache, then uninstall. When reinstalling, ensure you are connected to a good network during the onboarding process to allow for a proper data sync.

I am aware of a crash caused by a newly introduced radical (ribcage), it is image-based so has no Unicode. The app crashes whenever it tries to show this radical on whatever screen you are on. I am working on a fix for this, a more long term fix to avoid future occurrence(s) I should add. Please bear with me while I work on this, thanks.

For what it’s worth, I’ve reported this to Tofugu and asked for clarification, because (as I understand it) their intention was to serve everything as Unicode wherever possible.

I don’t get crashes, thankfully, but I do get entirely an entirely invisible radical in SD, which isn’t ideal
