Am I doing wanikani wrong?

So, I’m a little confused. When wanikani says there are more readings for a Kanji or more possible definitions for a vocabulary item, am I supposed to be memorizing all of them? The system let’s you move on if you can remember one correct reading or one correct definition of a word. I signed up about 7 weeks ago and I am in the middle of level 5. If I was memorizing all the readings and all the possible definitions, I would be going a lot slower.

I remember having the same doubt when I started! My advice is to only memorize the “main” readings and meanings WaniKani gives you (the ones with the mnemonics basically) and the rest may or may not come later with vocab. Memorizing all possible readings and meanings ahead of time is both really hard and really impractical.

Also note that this issue is going to become less common generally as you progress through the course. High frequency kanji that you learn early on like 今, 生 or 女 will tend to have a lot of readings in common use but those are outliers to some extent. In general the bulk of the kanji have one or two useful readings that are worth memorizing.

vocab you unlock after guru of the kanji will often have combinations with other kana and kanji that will give you some of the other common readings as well. not 100% coverage but it’s a start.
