I have seen 縁 several times in the wild, and each time, it didn’t mean “rim” or “brim” or “edge”, but fate.
Could it be added so that learners are aware of its meaning too? (I’m aware I can add my own synonym, I’m not trying to pass the word, just thinking it’s weird that this common meaning for the word is not mentioned). Maybe it’s not on the meaning of the vocab because the vocab is ふち and when it means fate it is read えん?
Funny that WK mnemonics try to use “edge” for 無縁, 縁談 and 縁起 too. I think it shouldn’t.
My proposal would be to force “destiny” to fit 縁 instead.
縁 might be OK in 額縁 or just 縁. Otherwise, 縁 like in 縁がある.

This is the same issue with 額, and the mods have metioned that they don’t really have a way to fix it. Because if we have one vocab entry for ふち, and a whole separate one for えん, then how would we know which one is being asked for during reviews. The best they can do is use the more popular meaning, and according to jpdb that’s えん (top 2500 vs top 14k) So, @Mods would you consider making this change? And if not, how about adding fate as a second meaning for the 縁 kanji, and a short explanation with the vocab? Like polv just said, the fate meaning fits better in some vocab words. Personally I’ve been struggling with 縁起 because I can’t really make sense from edge + wake up, I think it would help to think of it as fate + wake up.
I would like to at least see one context sentence using it for the kanji, I think that would be fine. Or wait maybe context sentences are for vocab only
Thanks for the feedback everyone! I’ll bring this up with the content team and we’ll let you know what they decide
Awesome! Thanks to the team and thanks for letting me know!
