A new native Android app

@Yuserys I see you use the donut chart for your subject progress view. Do you like it so far?

Well spotted haha. I really like it, it gives me a faster overview on how much I have mastered and the animations are really smooth!

Nice! I created it because it saves me some scrolling time. It’s precise and straight to the point like you mentioned and the animation is smooth.

I have published a new version (1.11.527) containing the fixes for issues @Yuserys pointed out namely:

  • Fixed non-kana/kana validator bug
  • Set date formatting to use English locale

For the kana/non-kana validator, it works like this:
When answering a reading, typing a non-kana text will trigger the validator except in the case that the non-kana text is “n” and it appears at the end of the text in which case it will be converted to its kana equivalent “ん”. Example あらかじm3.
When answering a meaning, typing a kana text should trigger the validator. Example honだ.

The update should be available in a couple of minutes.

I use a foldable and the large device layouts look good on it. I haven’t been encountering any issues so i’ve been quiet.

That’s great! Thank you for letting me know this. I’m glad the app is adapting well for larger screen sizes and that you haven’t had any issues.

I said I was going to take a break but ended up working (will take the break eventually.)
Someone requested a widget feature a while back (don’t know who), happy to let you know this will be available in the next update. In fact, that is about the only new feature.
There will be two widgets available (a third will be added in the future):

  1. A quick peek widget that lets you “peek” your available lessons and reviews
  2. A “Word of the Day” widget that
you guessed it, shows a new vocabulary daily

Here are some screenshots:

Day Theme

Night Theme

The Japanese texts might not render in the font you are used to; this can be fixed by adding Japanese as a language (different from Japanese input methods). You can do this by going to Settings > System > Languages and adding Japanese (æ—„æœŹèȘž) as a language.

The Word of the Day widget can be expanded vertically to show more content provided you have space for it. Both widgets can be expanded horizontally up to a predefined minimum.

For the Word of the Day widget, at first you will be greeted with a no content view but should be updated the next day. I might provide a placeholder content for the initial view so it is not blank.

Note: The UI is not final and can change.

Would you consider a feature that brings back burned items after a few months, interleaved with the regular reviews, but obviously they do not count on WK?

Possible options could be:

  • How many days before bringing them back
  • How many burned items (max) to bring back during each review session

If I understood this correctly, this is what extra study is except the part where it is interleaved with reviews. I would just do extra study for burned items since they won’t be counted as part of the reviews.

Interleaved, so you do not know when they are coming. Of course to keep track of it the app would need its own internal SRS tracking for burned items specifically.

In extra study, AFAIK, I have no control when burned items are coming back.

Hey! I wanted to report two minor things.

  1. For the radical “creeper”, the height of the blue box in the review screen reduces a bit. Maybe a fixed height would be good?
  2. For my level-up I got the animation (which I really missed  ), but it wasn’t very smooth when it appeared (I think it was like a force-refresh a few seconds after my review session ended and then it just popped up).

Another question I have is, did you find a cause for the bug where letters in kana input are ignored when typing fast? I imagine it’s very hard to find, but it’s the one bug that is quite “annoying” for me because I regularly fail a bunch of reviews due to it. I know it’s a me-problem since I could double-check my answer, but I’m very used to go through my reviews in high-speed.

As always, kepp up the good work, I really enjoy your app!

How do you mean?

Yes, I am aware of this - I just didn’t bother to fix it as I considered it too minor but since you mentioned it, it must have bothered you so I will fix it.

I will look into this.

No, I have not found the cause as I have not looked at it. I experience it myself and what I do is ensure I am not typing two keys at the same time.

For the next update, I added a feature to allow turning on/off notifications in settings. As a result of this change, you might not receive notifications if you had previously enabled notifications. To start receiving notifications again, go to Settings > General and enable notifications.

The General setting is new and will be available from next update onwards. I updated some icons in settings screen as part of the changes.

What’s new?

  • Fixed lessons/reviews character header height - prevents the container from resizing (usually happens to radicals with no characters @Yuserys
  • Tweaked the level up animation to allow for a smoother reveal @Yuserys
  • Removed the subscription type from the app bar
  • Fixed level up animation font size on large screens
  • Fixed lessons quiz button height - should now be of the same height as the subject characters
  • Added haptic feedback to reviews content buttons
  • Added widget support
  • Added support for enabling and disabling notifications
  • Fixed shadow artefact around disabled reviews content button when using day theme.
  • Fixed review forecast staleness - a situation where today’s forecast isn’t always at the top

Hello! First of all, thank you for your hard work. I haven’t had the chance to try your app yet, but it seems like you’re making great progress.

I have a question: Do you consider adding custom lists for extra study, similar to the functionality in Item Inspector, where you can add all words containing a specific Kanji or save Kanji when reviewing them to focus on later?

For example, an “Add to X List” button. This feature seems to be missing from the current apps, as far as I know.

Hi @Giorgos1992, sounds like an interesting feature. I usually don’t use scripts so excuse me as I am not familiar with Item Inspector.

What would be limit to the amount of lists one can have ensuring the feature remains usable? Like todo lists that end up not being used anymore by users.

Where will the “Add to X List” button be?

To summarise your feature request, you want custom lists you can add subjects to so you can later review them in extra study. Is that it?

The latest update is now available. Version number 1.12.561.
