A new native Android app

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and requests.

This question was asked previously. You said you interact with WK typically in Anki mode, how do you do that?
For Anki mode I am not sure you and the other person mean the same thing. If I understand Anki correctly it is like showing different items that allows going through them individually kind of like a game of show me your card or something similar. Is this what you are talking about?

I think you’d find that the items you need are in the side bar. You can go through all the items for all levels. Moreover, the search feature does a good job of looking for any item you want.
I could implement a more granular searching that allows some advanced search but that won’t be available in the first public release.

My goal for the app was to have it look and feel like the website, so I get why you think that way.
I would like your thought on how you would implement the sidebar or integrate the items in the sidebar without a sidebar. Please share your thoughts on what a native app would look like.

Next update has been published and should be available for download shortly. For changes in the new update, please refer to the replied post. The version number is 1.9.497. Please ensure when reporting issues, that you are running the latest version of the app.

@Yuserys I excluded the Wrap Up feature in this update because I was not satisfied with it. There were a couple of inconsistencies that I need to iron out before I make it available.

Thanks!

So far the app is perfect, solved the problem I had with the UI of the other ones, thank you for your work!
Also, I added my suggestion about the widget in the spreadsheet, I hope you consider it.

Thank you, sure I will consider every request plus I like the idea of a widget. I want to get the app stable and have it feature matching the website before picking up requests.

Hey! Thanks for the new update

Just wanted to let you know I just levelled up using the app and everything worked fine, everything updated immediately. I also noticed that the SRS tags seem to be correct now as well as the kanji rendering in the meaning/reading sections.

Since I now got a whole bunch of new lessons I can test the Interleaving in the coming days. Don’t worry too much about the Wrap Up button, if I’m really in a hurry I can just use the webapp!

A smaller thing I noticed: I had a vocab (edit: it was 電波) where there was an unrendered & in the meaning text.

PS: Didnt find the easter egg so far :joy:

I’ll look into the & thing. I also noticed it when I reviewed that vocabulary.
The Easter egg is there, just not obvious. Keep looking.

Hello, thank you for creating this mobile app.

May I request to get added to the tester list? I’d love to try it out.

I have added my email to the spreadsheet.

Thank you in advance!

Sure, you can. Welcome to the group, I have added you to the list. Please proceed to using the link in the sheet to join and download the app.

Thank you very much, I’ll be testing it out during a trip I have to go on without my computer.

How would you describe the stability of the app? Do you think it’s ready for open-testing?

Another small bug: When I open the settings while the search bar is visible, this is what I get:

(Pixel 8 Pro)

That bug seems to not just be when going to settings only, it shows up also on screens that don’t have an app bar.
Now fixed. Thank you!

I think the SRS indicators might not work as intended for lessons. I did the following lesson but didn’t remember the reading. It still showed me the green Apprentice badge:

Yes, I am aware of this since I introduced the bug in the last minute. I have decided to not show SRS during lessons to keep in line with the website so from the next update quizzes won’t show it. If you would like me to keep it let me know.

I am overhauling the answer validator logic and while doing that and my reviews I found a bug in the current version of the app. Typing the meaning for the kanji “” (Samurai) doesn’t let you through and shows a hint saying it wants the on’yomi reading. The validator doesn’t know what to do because the kun’yomi reading for that kanji is “さむらい” which it converts to romaji and realises it’s not the on’yomi reading.

Having mentioned that bug, and as part of the overhaul, I am adding the long-awaited typo tolerance/leniency in the next update with some other validators like:

  • Answers in user synonyms
  • Checking kanji doesn’t start with “to” since it’s not a verb
  • Checking verbal vocabulary starts with “to” etc

My test for the kanji “士” on the next version fixes the aforementioned bug. Since I can’t test all possible scenarios, I’d rely on everyone to help test the upcoming changes. There is a chance of bugs showing up in the next but I will be on standby to fix every bug related to the changes above as soon as they are reported, and release subsequent fixes as updates.

I published a new version - 1.10.522. This update includes the following features and fixes:

  • Added typo tolerance and more validations. The new validations include the following
    • Check that kanji does not start with “to”
    • Check that verb vocabulary starts with “to”
    • Check related meanings and readings - for example, the kanji reading is こう if you type the vocabulary reading you should get a visual prompt letting you know it wants the kanji reading.
  • Revised screen layout for larger devices
  • Center-aligned answer hint popup text
  • Fixed shown search bar on screens that should not have one - @Yuserys
  • Fixed lesson slide navigation for large displays
  • Disabled SRS indicator during lessons
  • Fixed encoded HTML entities/tags - @Yuserys
  • Showed animation on level up - now when you level up an animation is shown
  • Fixed reviews percentage logic - during reviews the percentage should now be correctly calculated
  • Fixed SRS decrement logic - SRS decrement should now be based on the website rule
  • Updated the profile background image content scaling

As part of an ongoing effort to ensure the app adapts to larger screen sizes, I made some UI changes to how contents are rendered. Here are some screenshots for medium and large screens.

As always thank you all for the hard work. I want to request that rigorous testing be done for the new validations and typo tolerance.

PS: I will be taking a break to attend to some matters, but will be available to fix any crucial bug.

Hey, thanks for the new update and your hard work!!

The typo tolerance works great so far. I finally don’t have to remember how to spell “pronunciation” correctly. I did a lot of typos already (I’d like to say it was on purpose, but I was just very tired the last days) and there was not a single typo that made the app reject my answer.

One thing I’d like to suggest though is a little shaking animation when there’s non-Kana input for the readings, for example:

I’m not exactly sure how the website handles it and there might be exceptions to it (is Tシャツ part of the vocab? lol), but this happens quite a lot to me due to typing too fast.

Another thing I noticed while adding a user synonym during reviews is that it isn’t applied immediately. This is what happened:

  • I got a vocab wrong, added a user synonym in the same view.
  • It came up again after some other vocabs, typing the user synonym didn’t work and it also didn’t show up in the meaning section of the vocab.
  • After finishing the review session, I looked up the vocab and the user synonym was there.

And on the home screen, I noticed that the unlock date is half German (my locale). It says “Mär 9” which is like a mix of the German “9. März” and the English “March 9”. I guess it’s better to just keep everything English. (I know the pain of getting DateTimes right.)

And don’t worry about taking it slowly, take a break, your work so far has been amazing!!

That is definitely a bug as it should shake the input to let you know you have a non kana in the text. I will look into this right away.

I looked for “Tシャツ” using the website search but couldn’t find anything like that or any of its variants like シャツ, しゃつ. I remember I have typed in such at one point when taking reviews but the search doesn’t bring any result.

This is not a bug but how I implemented it. I might have to revisit this as I used eager loading for reviews and lessons content as opposed to lazy loading.

Makes sense the datetime uses the user locale for formatting. I will set it to use English locale.
