[2025] 多読/extensive reading challenge

Oh, I guess he stopped posting to narou

Hmmmmm, this complicates my decision to not read the web novel

Oh no, I bought the physical of this :see_no_evil:. Hope it’s readable.

I’ve only dropped 2 series that I can remember and it was the first  Think I got to volume 3? It was infuriatingly stupid. It tried wayyyyy to hard to be “down to earth” and “not like the other light novels” without having the self awareness to realize thats exactly what it was. I love dumb stories, but the author has to embrace it. A dumb story where the author is clearly trying to write something serious and realistic is just cringe.

Its clearly got some degree of popularity so maybe you’ll feel differently, but that book was too cringe for me.

After reading too much Akagawa, I decided to try something different.

It’s a murder-mystery-supernatural-horror story, so it’s got a bit of everything.
This was much harder than anything I’ve read before, L39 according to Natively. Grammar-wise it wasn’t too diffcult, but it was 600 odd pages of kanji madness. I would’ve been lost without yomichan.

Oh, I recently read another book from the same author, どこの家にも怖いものはいる | L32
It’s a “real” story, in the sense that the main character is the author himself (but it’s otherwise supernatural/horror). The author mentions writing a few books over the course of the event of that one, including (I think) the one you read. (He is using a lot the NのごときV-るもの pattern for his titles, so I may be wrong)

I have just read ホームズの by 郎 which I enjoyed more than I think I should. But I have a question

Spoiler!
Someone tries to kill Harumi in a really complicated way. We find who the attempted killer is, but unless I missed it, its not explained why. Does anyone know?

I watched the anime somewhat recently and surprisingly enough I actually liked it. I think a big part of it was just them cutting out a lot of the inner monologuing. Like usually I prefer the LN but in this case I felt like it was way better just having the two characters shut up a bit.

Considering picking the LN back up one day. Also watched the roshidere anime and definitely gonna wanna pick that up soon.

Just read vol 5. Came across it in animate the other day and insta bought. Man, crazy ride this volume was. Had expectations kinda low but the author did not disappoint. The author also does a great job of not including random shit that doesnt really matter. It actually feels pretty good to read because I know every chapter will actually contain interactions that matter.

I think Im actually just gonna go ahead and read the web novel, but I wanna figure out a way to get it onto my kindle…

EDIT: I have figured out a way to get it on my kindle and done so.

In case you missed out on it: The Advanced Book Club is currently polling for their next pick! Maybe one of the books strikes your fancy and you’d like to jump in?

Well, it’s the end of the year, time to wrap up!

I achieved my goal of reading more than 20 non-LN books quite early in the year, so I didn’t update past that, but it was a good year.
On that note, I guess I won’t be any more active on this forum in 2025, so I’m not sure if it makes sense to make a new table, but we’ll see.

I didn’t really have a good year with reading, I only read some JoJo and finished up part one of the Avan series. I did do some games in Japanese, though they were quite easy. Gonna try reading more again this year.

Well, I still made a table (and just removed myself from there).

I finished reading the final book of the 青春ブタ野郎 series! When I started reading light novels a few years back I thought it would be cool to do but didn’t think I’d actually get there.

Overall, I’d give the series an 8/10. Something about the way the author described transition scenes (e.g. taking the train) was comfy to me. I was disappointed that Mai basically disappears starting in the college arc. but at the same time had fun with Miori as a character and foil to Sakuta. It was best enjoyed with my logical brain off as the central conceit falls apart pretty quickly when you start asking questions.

I enjoyed learning what all people were reading back when this thread was active but never really thought I had much to contribute so I wanted to post here now that I do.
