Library Log :closed_book:

I finished 少女終末旅行 on Saturday and, good fucking heavens I was a mess in the final chapters. It was every bit as moving and thoughtfully made as I expected from the same person who did シメジ シミュレーション (recognizing that it was done first, in fact). The backgrounds are alive in themselves and deserve every bit of space given to them. They’re rendered with such creativity and variety while always sticking to the megastructural mode…

What can I even say?

It’s just stunning what they do with shapes and textures. Everything tessellates like a pattern by Conway while folding in on itself fractally like a Piranesi or Escher.

What gets me about it is how, in the running down of all things (you might say the inevitable asymptotic increase of entropy), a love of life perfuses every chapter despite life’s absence. A vast and empty world and still you sit as close as you can on a bench, because you’re here now and why not make of it what you can? I admit I wasn’t compelled by the more political musings the characters pursued on the subjects of war etc., but as far as they represent particular attitudes toward living, I was completely taken in. This is going right on my top shelf.

And yesterday I started スイートプールサイド by Shuuzo Oshimi. A short one that I’ll likely finish today, but I’m already considering it essential reading viz. Oshimi’s early thematic beginnings. The art style is a bit comical tho:

Reflections :face_with_monocle:

I passed Bunpro’s N4 practice test!!

Both my blunders were on questions where I was waffling between two answers… in both cases the one I almost picked turned out to be right ToT nevertheless I’m pleased with this performance. I’m invested in quantitative metrics of progress so this is a nice milestone to hit, and I’ll be riding the satisfaction for a while until I eventually try N3 around the spring.

I’ve been keeping up my coding obsession, which I think is here to stay. Besides finishing the LeetCode 75, I went through the 50 problem SQL series to familiarize myself with writing queries. Competency with databases seems to be a common requirement in job postings so I thought it would be a good idea to develop a bit of skill there. Unfortunately, my LeetCode daily streak was broken by a problem that was best solved with segment trees, which I’d never implemented before. I’m taking it as a learning opportunity—one day I’ll be skilled enough to take on whatever daily comes my way.

Ummm I think that’s it okay thanks :] I also rephrased my weekly writing goal as just three writing days, since these days I’m occasionally composing a few sentences in Japanese for movie reviews as well.

For Next Week… :bullseye:

I’m gonna need to find something new to read starting tomorrow. Any recommendations…? I admit 少女終末旅行 was a bit exhausting because of how abstract and verbose certain chapters got, so I’d love a little reprieve.

POTW :camera:

I finally got around to processing some pics I took in December. One day I was walking around the nearby oldtown and there was a crane that I couldn’t stop taking pictures of. I just think machines are cool.
