Hmm, I was actually hoping to participate the day before the actual equinox day (on the Wednesday), since I have the day off work that day. (Also, the March Madness college basketball tournament starts on Thursday and runs all weekend, and I usually have the tv on all day while the tournament is going…which I imagine would make reading much harder.
) I guess no one else was planning on starting that early on the readathon, though, so I might need to reconsider…
Tai is a strict leader… If anyone reads outside of the equinox window
Off wiv their heads .
Seriously it probably won’t matter…
I think…
Checking over my shoulder for stabby goose
AHHH I’m sorry for making the new date inconvenient Please feel free to read on Wednesday and start us off! You can be the first reader of the event (if you want to be!!)
Wanna note this…auspicious occasion
Tai has officially apologized for being responsible for picking the location and angle of the earth
I may take you up on that, being the one to start this event off. I’ve been looking forward to this - I have plans to start my first light novel this readathon, instead of sticking only with manga! I really appreciate you setting these up!
Oh wow! I can’t imagine anything being more suitable for the start of this event
Have you decided on the LN yet?
CandyKale’s Readathon Goals
For this one, I’ll be going with Saturday midday to Sunday midday as it will give me the biggest amount of reading time in a 24 hour period.
I think I’m going to use the time to wrap up some half started manga (錬金術師 Vol 1 I’m looking at you) and also get some serious prose practice in. I bought a load of the kid’s light novel series Kaitou Red last year, and flicked through a few pages but never seriously read them. On Natively they’re a lower level than the light novel I’m currently attempting, so I think it might be a good time to just see how far through I can make it through volume one.
I won’t set any page goals, I’ll use this as my benchmark for future challenges
Content Goals
Complete 鋼の錬金術師 Vol 1
Start 怪盗レッド Vol 1
I’ll take part, but haven’t worked out my window. Probably either Thursday itself, or Wednesday leading into Thursday.
I’ll use the time to try to mop up clubs that have effectively ended without me completing the books, or progressing manga I’m reading alone.
Main things I’ll target will be the Spy Family light novel, 嵐のピクニック, and おじいさまと猫. But I’ll also see how behind I am with other things by then!
this is perfect timing for me because I have fridays off! (my “weekend” is not on the weekend
)
also this is actually my first forum post!! (decided i need to stop just lurking haha) so here goes:
jam's goals
- read at least one chapter of ワンピース; I have been doing this every day since Feb 10th! currently on ch. 46 - only 3 more years to go
- hopefully finish Vol. 7 of とんがり帽子のアトリエ (currently on page 120 of 175), have been stuck on Vol. 7 for months, not sure why frankly
- read a decent chunk of the すずめの戸締り novel (the version with ふりがな haha) - currently on p. 65 of 340
- maybe some コンビニ人間 - currently on p. 21 of 142
that’s everything I’m currently reading, but might make an early start on a couple of the book club books starting soon, namely:
- 銀の匙 (IMC)
- 六人の嘘つきな大学生 (ABC)
definitely not going to finish all of these haha but I figured I’d list them all so if I get bored of one I can switch to something
edit: updated goals
- i actually ended up finishing コンビニ人間 before the readathon even started haha
- since posting my goals, i started reading 魔女の宅急便! so i added that here too
welcome to the community and the readathon!
wow you almost made it to level 60 without posting
Well, I expect I’ll probably still be continuing with my 名探偵コナン obsession - I bought 6 コナン light novels during a Bookwalker light novel sale last fall, but still haven’t tried any of them yet. 5 are novelizations of movies, and the last is a novelization of a long set of episodes (The Clash of Red and Black, if you’re curious). So probably one of those. Although I plan to take advantage of Bookwalker’s current 50% coinback sale this week, so I’ll field recommendations for other possible first LNs as well!
A possible fellow Wednesday start - I might not be alone after all!
Snowwater’s participation / goals
Well, I was debating if I should join or not, but I’m a sucker for anything involving reading + some challenge (too many book clubs, the reading bingo at natively, etc). What might be interesting is that I am relatively close to finishing two of the books I’m currently reading, 嵐のピクニック and 風立ちぬ, so I think I’ll be done before the spring equinox that means I’ll probably read “free” books for this challenge (so not reading along with a club). I actually don’t do that as much as I should, so it should be fun!
Books to read:
変な家2
I was OBSESSED with 変な家 1 when we read it with the IBC. Finishing the whole volume in 1 week, that was the fastest I’ve ever read a Japanese book. I’ve been wanting to find a time to start with the next one in the series, but also hesitating as it was a bit pricey, but I just went why not? .. and bought it from Amazon. I’m looking forward to it.
ハリー・ポッターと秘密の部屋
I also really enjoyed the first HP book in Japanese - something about the writing style and the nostalgic fantasy made it a super cozy read. I started the first 2 chapters of the 2nd book this year, but it keeps getting forgotten as I struggle to keep up with book clubs, so I hope to spend some time with this one
?
I still want to add either one more light novel or a mystery manga to the challenge! To be defined.
Edit: there are a couple of strong candidates. One is 鋼の錬金術師, I’m following the book club but slightly behind for this week. The other is 魔導具師ダリヤはうつむかない ~今日から自由な職人ライフ~: I read a couple of the chapters of the manga in English a few years ago and enjoyed it, but it didn’t really continue getting updates. I saw the first 3 volumes in Japanese were free with Kindle Unlimited, so I decided to give it a try.
And finally, I have… 多聞くん今どっち!I don’t usually read shoujo much anymore, but I really enjoyed vols 1-6 in English so I bought vol 7 in JP to give it a try.
(I’m missing HP which is older, but my Kindle looks a bit like this for now)
Timing: I will probably be reading on the 21st
Goals: At least 3 hours of reading
Goal is a bit ambitious to me - I’ll be happy with getting 2 hours done - but I might as well make it a bit more challenging.
Gasp welcome!! You and I are at about the same place in すずめ, this is extra motivating to keep reading If you have a Natively account, I’d love to follow your progress
me with naruto smh
Thank you for joining! See you on the 21st!
Thank you
haha better late than never!
Cool! I’m really enjoying すずめ : ) unfortunately I don’t use Natively though…
Ahaha we’ll get there eventually!
Friday is out for me, but maybe I’ll try finish honzuki part 1 out a bit early on the weekend, should have 80 or so pages left by then
Sundrop’s Spring Readathon
Hello, it’s my first time trying this! I neglected reading for much of my Japanese-learning journey, and this year I’m going to focus on it. I’m currently about 47% into my first novel, and hope to be a little further along by the time this challenge starts. Maybe I’ll even be able to finish!
My 24 Hours: Saturday, 22nd of March
Goals:
- Read for the longest I have ever read Japanese (2+ hours).
- Make serious progress, maybe even finish my first Japanese novel.
Reads:
This one has been on my list for a while! Would you mind sharing your thoughts on the book (either so far or once you’re done)? I’m curious to hear from those who are reading/have read if they enjoyed and if it’s worth it.
Absolutely
In short, I very much recommend it. It’s the first novel I’ve ever read in Japanese, and honestly unlike most any other I’ve read before. The vibes are very ‘refreshing-inaka, reflections on life and death, wonder in the everyday’. I historically have enjoyed (in English) thrillers, horror, adventure, and crime, so I never would have expected to enjoy a book like this, but it feels so refreshing that I genuinely look forward to cracking it open on my breaks from work.
2 of my Japanese friends highly recommended the book 7 years ago (aah), and said they had read it in Junior High, so I assumed it was a book aimed for that age. The protagonist is a young junior-high girl. My tutor, however, surprised me by saying she considers it an adult novel. Having read about half of it, I can see how it would appeal to both audiences, but there are some things that are resonating with me as an adult that I might not have appreciated as much when I was younger.
Overall, I’m learning lots of plant vocabulary and thinking about love and life. Some parts could be considered slow-moving, but there are highly compelling passages and vivid prose. It’s not too long a book (~200 pages), so I feel like I’m making smooth progress.
I’m very glad to be reading it and happy it’s my first novel. If you read it, I’d really love to hear your thoughts.
Prath’s Spring Readathon
Yayyy it’s here! I’ll be reading on Saturday. I don’t have anything elaborate this time - just want to beat my previous goals and catch up with all the book clubs!
