Awesome list, love it
I wonder if one day my Japanese will be good enough so that I can use them. Should start collecting them somewhere!
oh hey, that’s wes robertson! he’s a super cool japanese linguist who focuses a lot of internet and sociology stuff. He also runs a super cool blog for current slang and makes short form content explaining particular challenges in register/writing style/that kinda stuff, worth checkin out https://wesleycrobertson.wordpress.com/
I’ve gotten a lot of really good (but mostly more academic) book recs from following what he reads lmao. He also has his own book: Scripting Japan - Orthography, Variation, and the Creation of Meaning in Written Japanese, which I have not managed to get my hands on yet but really would like to
lol. Dr Wes is a good bsky follow. I should go interview him one day, he teaches at my alma mater

2026 Goals
明けましておめでとう!
Here’s my progress on my goals:
| Progress | Goal | % | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 120 | 219 | N3 reviewed | 55% | |
| 312 | 16000 | manga pages read | 2% | |
| 8070 | 9254 | WK items burned | 87% | |
| 3 | 50 | hours of CJI | 6% | |
| (need to count) | 0 | leeches remaining | ? | |
| 8 | 54 | Irodori chapters | 15% |
I’ve made a little bit of progress in everything since my last update! I kind of stopped SRS though. One of these days I’m going to remember vacation mode…
I haven’t really thought much about 2026 language goals, but in general I want to try reading books I already have instead of buying new ones (in English and Japanese). So this year I’m taking part in the 2026 Tsundoku reading thread! You can see my big scary backlog in my home post
I also want to try posting an update in my study log every day, even if it’s a small update. Which means I have to study every day! Jan 1 doesn’t count because I was doing holiday stuff yesterday with family and had absolutely no time for Japanese.
Other than that, I have the same long-term goals as before ![]()
Today’s Progress
All that above about Japanese, and yet today I’ve decided to open a French textbook for the first time in years ![]()
I’ve mainly been figuring out what I want to focus on this month rather than fully studying today. But I did some Bunpro reviews and listened to some Comprehensible Japanese.

Oooh I’ll have to pick this up! I checked my library to see if it’s there, and while that’s not there, they do have this fun looking article by him:

Studying
I’m going to give Anki another try, and might change some of my SRS goals if I can stick with Anki this time. Even with Yomitan integration, I find myself spending way more time making cards than studying them. And I tend to forget to do my reviews. But it’s also very helpful for actually remembering words since I have to put so much effort into each card, and anki audio reviews are the sole reason my Irish pronunciation was pretty decent in college.
I’m using the same note/card types as before since that setup already worked for me. Just tweaked it a little and changed some styling to match my gruvbox theme
(i’ve gone from a gruvbox hater to obsessed in the last few months)
Media
Started watching Look Back with Japanese subs (I read the manga in Japanese and watched the movie with English subs). It’s not too hard to read what’s going on, but I’m listening to each line a few times so I can make sure I’m understanding the audio too and not just the subtitles
I also watched a bit of Sailor Moon (which I don’t think I’ve ever seen a full episode of) today and last night. No Japanese subs, we die like men. I understand a few words here and there, and I understand the gist of what’s going on, but it’s pretty hard >_<
