:sailboat: The Adventure Begins

A strong storm picks up and you’re blown about in the wind with the rain pelting you on all sides. Your boat has taken damage and land is nowhere in sight. Just water, and more water. What will you do? Your choices will determine your fate!

This is a choose your own adventure book and is part of a series of 5 independent books that are in paper form only. Do you dare join an adventure party to find out if you have what it takes to survive???

Furigana: Yes

Difficulty level thoughts: BBC level. Japanese reviewers suggest it’s the right level for a 3rd grader but too easy for a 6th grader.

Set this thread to watching!

The book doesn’t have page numbers, but scenes (circled number at top of page). To help people orient and avoid spoilers, put comments under the scene name. For example: “Scene 1-3” would mean scene 1, page 3 of that scene. Or just write “scene 1 page 3”. That way, if someone else isn’t on that scene/page yet, they can wait to open it!

If you’re joining the party exploring this book, we are going to read in “Stages”, which is a collection of scenes up to the next decision point, i.e., Stage (A, B, C, etc). We are aiming to take up to 2 weeks on Stage A, and up to 1 week per stage from Stage B onwards.

:world_map: Not getting lost! :world_map:

Anyone can join - here’s how! Set this thread to “watching” so that you receive alerts!

If you’re joining the party, we can expect among members there will be injuries (ill health) and detours (holidays and life overwhelm) along the way. To keep it fun, moving forward, and to keep that from putting anyone off committing to joining the group, here is how we handle this.

At the start of each stage there is a poll to join, these are recorded in the next section. We’ll wait at least a week for everyone to join and vote at each decision point. But if life happens and we don’t see you, we’ll move on and hope you catch up! On the other hand, if everyone makes it early, we’ll move on right away to keep it moving as a lot of stages are short. Here are the steps:

  1. Stage start poll: mark yourself reading along (links in next section)
  2. Read on from the chosen scene until you reach the next decision point or a ゲームオーバー. If it’s a ゲームオーバー, then go back to the previous decision point and follow the other branch. If it’s a decision point, go to the next step.
  3. Next decision point poll: vote in the poll. Mitrac tries to create them right away but feel free to create it if you are there first!
  4. Stage finish: the earlier of either a) everyone in the active party has voted or b) a week has gone by.
  5. We declare the winning route and move on to the next stage!
  6. All decision points will be recorded in the Party Guide below.

:pushpin: Party guide :pushpin:

All decision poll links will go here for party members and anyone brave enough to try to catch up. Join soon and bring water :sweat_droplets:

Welcome to Stage A of :ocean: :spouting_whale: 太平洋を泳ぎぬけ - Escape from the Pacific Ocean!

The voyage is upon us! We’ve packed our bags and are carrying provisions into the boat. We’ll push off as soon as WeepingWeeb gets dropped off by helicopter.

Read scenes :one:-:four: until you read the decision point!

Participation

Stage is open until all votes are in or until April 6th

Your briefing

We expect to take 2 weeks for this stage - there are 11 pages of text up to the first decision point. Vote in this poll to show your participation. I recommend everyone reading along as default chooses the first option, as the group will move on once everyone joining live has voted in the decision poll, or latest on April 6th (or later as agreed). The second option is NOT for slower readers, it is just to signal, e.g., if as we move through the adventure, you have a holiday and you might miss voting and don’t mind the group moving on faster/earlier without you. Of course, you can still vote in the decision point!

Don’t worry if you’re not sure how all this works, I’ll tag people in the first few weeks if I think we lost you, and you’ll get the hang of it in no time!

Are you joining Stage A?
  • I’m joining live, reading along - see you at the decision point!
  • I will catch up later - don’t wait for me
  • I’m exploring solo - don’t wait for me

Oh man, I’m super excited! Glad to join you all!! While I’ve never been at sea on a boat, I’ve watched plenty of movies where they have been, so I’m pretty sure we’ll be fine. :sparkles:

Scene 4-1 spoilers: Honestly it feels like おじさん’s going to be the first to perish here unless we get desperate early and start drinking salt water. Never split up, as they say.

Has anyone tracked their pages read in these series on Natively? How did you do it?

I asked this question as well, it’s tricky
what @mitrac said was previously done was take the no of pages read per scene/ per week and just add that as page read … then when book done - mark complete

not really any other way to do it that makes sense unless you know how many pages are part of this adventure already

also already read this but now omg have to wait two weeks for a decision
i need to refresh my decision options (forgot)

if anyone wants them (or want to put in the main post)
Renshuu vocab list already built (but only to decision point) will keep working as we read
Renshuu sentence list also here

I’ll do my best to keep them updated as we go along (but so be aware it won’t be every sentence and every word…this is all fairly manual and a bit time consuming)

Uhh, i didn’t, and the previous book is still in my currently reading because it would feel like cheating to mark it as complete

This will be my first foray into these seas (I didn’t know of the previous club reads) so my hope is the infamous sea turtle from Pirates of the Caribbean will help me find my way :joy:

My plan for tracking was to just count the number of pages each week that I read and add those. It’s similar to how I work through some of the textbooks with the front being one type of practice and the back being a second type so I just add the new pages each week til it’s done.

oh yeah decisions

Scene A - vote/thoughts

Reread this - after a readathon ouch head hurts (but way easier than that last novel) hahahaha

honestly I’m not sure what’s best we have water coming in but we don’t know how much longer we have to actually abandon the yacht… so like uhhhhh we probably will have to abandon it anyway mayhaps…

unless my adventure shark friend comes along to save me… so I say abandon ye old yacht while have time to “safely” get into the life boat maybe… of course we may also end up with our friend on the jungle boat cruise avoiding things in the water too…

Ah, that’s a good simple idea, I’ll probably do that. Thanks!

Awesome to have you! I’m looking forward to reading with you.

:sun_behind_small_cloud: Welcome aboard everyone!! So glad to have you!

While more passengers embark I’ll continue with the announcements…

there are links to vocab lists on the home page (thanks @shuly) - and remember to ask fellow passengers or crew if you need help!

There are dark clouds on the horizon, but nothing to worry about, we have an experienced crew, some of whom have even seen movies about being at sea!

Kkryzzzzzssssssss Wait… what?! Someone fell xxfruyyyyzz overboard (@prath :sob:). Ooh is this thing still on?! Hahahaa. Continue mingling everyone and waaaagxgryyuukvvkkzz…

scene A decision

Oh no, we’re already being asked to abandon the boat! :joy: Can’t we repair the hole in the side? :hammer_and_wrench: I’m worried if we get on the lifeboat we won’t have enough supplies, and the tips beforehand said to stay on the boat if possible.

i know right!!! could go either way!!! :anchor: :dolphin:

Decision

I want to stay in the big yacht as long as possible. We’ll probably have to go to the lifeboat at some point, but let’s try to save the big boat first.

decision

but how much time do we have to stay on the big yacht before it sinks?

assuming that happens - in this book expect sinking inevitable
(fish go blub)

so if we stay too long could miss the opportunity to safety board the raft and then lose both… then end up in the water with the manatees
(oh wait - that’s the other book) :palm_tree:

we take our chances with the sharks and sea otters :shark: :otter:
grandpa left in a raft already right :old_man: :person_rowing_boat:

tbh I don’t care which we pick but my head is still going in circles cuz we don’t know how much time before fish go blub

I had ready decided to abandon ship, wasn’t even thinking that repairing it would be a possibility :joy: I saw water, thought’I can’t swim!’ And jumped straight for the raft.

Imagine if we sink and die in the next scene because we decided to stay on the boat… I think that would be the shortest survival adventure ever!

details - ties?

we have 8 readers…what do we do if there is a tie?

leave half on the yacht :sailboat: other half in the raft :safety_vest:

jokes aside, not really sure how tie breakers get handled?
