Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Aisha starts experimenting and discovering things, and because she can’t explain well why she has certain impressions, Orie asks her to describe what she smells. When she does so, Orie starts realizing how much she herself is lacking and how much more skilled Aisha is. How will this end for the Koukun?

4.1

Apparently some time has passed, Aisha is on her way to becoming a Koushi, and she is famous for her talent everywhere. The outbreak of the pests is in its third year, and the required burning of the fields is taking its toll on the population - everywhere except in one village…

I think she already is a Koushi. There was a sequence where the minister’s son was wondering if it was a 見習い following his grandma, upon which he was told that no, she’d just flown through the testing process super quickly.

I was really surprised we got such a huge time jump! I think a couple years must have passed, like 3 or 4 maybe? But it makes sense; there’s no need to watch all the research and progress and decline happen in slow motion. I’m sure we’ll get to see the big picture soon enough.

On another point; it took me over a week to make my way through 3.10. I was tired, but I think I also shouldn’t have forced this book at the time. I found this week was much easier to stay focused on. Anyone else having a similar experience?

Does the timeskip mean we’ve finally got past all the setup and world building and into the story proper? I guess we’ll see. Given that the danger here is agricultural it makes sense that we need to skip forwards, because it’s all slow motion, not immediate.

It was interesting to get ユギル’s point of view here. I have the suspicion that at some point in the plot he’s going to feel very conflicted between what he feels is right and what he thinks he ought to do based on his father’s influence.

おばさま, so aunt (or general older female relative, in this case: ユギル is in the 新 branch of the family, and ミジマ is the daughter of the head of the 旧 branch)), not grandma.

Ah, yes. Thanks for the correction.

In the conversation with the 郡司, ユギル had a claim that they knew of all the schemings (experimenting with the fertilizer), but the punishments were quite light compared to that (e.g. exile instead of death). Was he trying to achieve better loyalty by implying that if they continued scheming, there would be more severe punishments?

For me, it was the opposite. 3.10 was a warm and happy episode, finished it in one go. 4.1 brought us back to the harsh reality, and I’m starting to worry about アイシャ too. In this latter part I also had to look up much more words, which didn’t help with the immersion.

That could be said about オードセン too. It seems イール is going to be the final boss (apart from nature itself).

We know that they do in fact know all about this, because this is the stuff that イール and ユギル and オードセン were talking about in book one and several years ago. Also it sounded to me like the オグダ authorities were the ones who’d done the banishing, in a preemptive “we found the culprits and dealt with them, this was nothing to do with us” attempt (the new 郡司 says ご報告致しました通り and ご存知のことと存じます: they identified the “duplicitous merchants” and exiled the “lazy and incompetent former governor” and sent a report in to the imperial authorities).

I think the big thing ユギル is trying to hammer home here is that the オオヨマ are here because そなたらは、神に背いたのだ. If the provinces firmly believe that the 香君 is a god, and that going against her wishes brings disaster on the country, it doesn’t matter who happens to be the 郡司 because the rice crop will still firmly tie the provinces to the empire. It’s pure luck for the empire that this province’s dabbling in self sufficiency in rice coincided with the オオヨマ but they’re absolutely going to exploit it.

Thanks for clarifying! It seems I did miss a few details.
