見返る - To Look Back On... Or To reflect upon one's life?

見返る…
I just had this lesson. WK lists the meanings as “To look back on” and “to look back at”. But that has me wondering… do they mean to use it like “to look back on my life” or “to reflect on one’s life” or more literally… I just walked past the tree and then turned to “look back at” it? (Or both?)

Jisho only had the one meaning…

I tried searching Google a few different ways and came up with nothing (expecting an explanation over at Hi-Native/Lang-8 or Reddit)…

Does anyone know? Perhaps Mami-さん knows?

Thanks everyone!

I don’t know if you came up with this result. Came from searching without る.

Interesting the different ways it can be applied.

I did not see that result. My first search resulted me in someone translating Hebrew or Arabic (it was a flowy language) into English I think… x4.
My second search resulted in English definitions in English for Reflection… and then further down some unrelated things in Japanese. (Very weird).
I did not think to drop the る however.
Is that a trick for searching for Japanese answers in general? I mean, does that usually work? Going to check that out - thanks!

Oh, that seems to still have just the one meaning…
But I do like 見返す “to stare back at” (often in triumph, I guess!). That was neat.

None of the related words seem to be about reflecting (upon one’s past, ideas, or anything)… Hm…
Perhaps it is only literal after all…

I just generally break down words to get different results. Especially so in Japanese so that I don’t get all Japanese results.

I had a mix of Japanese and English in my search string, hoping for an answer in English from a learning website…

What about 顧みる ?

Hmm… well that seems to have both of those uses! (Thanks!)
My question is more whether 見返る also has both those uses, or if it cannot be used in any other way…?

I do that as well. I usually have very many issues if I use all Japanese. And I get a lot of Chinese results if I search just with kanji.

Yeah, only Chinese came up for me when I tried searching something yesterday, that’s why I’ve added in the Japanese today.

Well… perhaps it’s time for @mamimumason to weigh in on this subject?

Help us, please, Mamiーさん!

Hi

I don’t use 見返る for “to look back on my life.” Instead, we use “振り返る,” which also means to look back. With this word, you cay say 過去を振り返る or 人生を振り返る or something like that. Of course, 顧みる works for 過去を顧みる, 人生を顧みる too, but we don’t usually use it to physically look back.

Thank you very much for your explanations, Mami-さん!

Much appreciated. Now to store these phrases in my memory banks. ^^

Any idea where the spreadsheet is for suggesting new WaniKani vocab? Someone should recommend 振り返る get added.

I don’t know precisely, but the link to it should be in an archived thread in the WaniKani section… so if you can search merely that part… should be there. I wonder if it’s still pinned at the top of the archives - if so should be easy to spot and fairly obvious. ^^ (I believe “request” was in the title of thread, or “addition”.)

I checked and it’s not pinned. And since I couldn’t remember the name of the topic I couldn’t find it by search… :frowning:

I’ll try! Let’s see if I can find it.
Although, if @viet and the Discourse Dev team didn’t already solve that no-search results in Japanese from archives bug yet (or wound up doing something wonky) this may be related.

My turn! : D

Hmm, @seanblue, either it’s that bug (I tried searching for : “#wanikani status:archived request” and also “@koichi #wanikani status:archived request” with advanced search, and came up with nothing), or it’s Viet’s Request Synonym thread with only 45 replies. Problem is, I’m sure it linked a spreadsheet in the first post and mentioned it being a spreadsheet. I also thought it had over 200 posts… So I don’t think that was it. (Found that thread by searching “Request” in general, and it only brought up 50 results. That was somewhere in the bottom half.)

It seems the search function on this forum is possibly even more broken than when WaniKani.com hosted forums themselves… Hrmmmm : /

? i searched for request and it was the 12th result

https://community.wanikani.com/t/Request-New-Vocabulary/3154

It is the sixth result if you search request vocabulary.

Yeah I finally found it too by searching for docs.google. @viet Can we get the document pinned somewhere again? It’s a pretty important document to have access to.

Very weird! It didn’t show up on my list at all. I am on Mobile. I don’t think that’s supposed to make a difference (Discourse’s own website says it’s designed with phones in mind) but it does look and react differently for me (Chrome is my browser on Android). Very bizarre.

Thank you for finding this for us. If that’s still a thing, should it be re-pinned or a new one pinned up in Feedback or something?

Also, just out of curiosity Viet, but did that other search issue get resolved?

Thanks again! : D
