I don’t think I would ever use Automobile unless being formal in presentation or describing the industry in general. I also feel it encompasses all motorized 4 wheel vehicles or the industry they are produced in. I do use Vehicle more than Car because, in our family, we have a Truck, an Equinox (crossover) and a Camaro (vroom vroom)… the truck is Truck but the Equinox and Camaro are both “Cars”. So when asking which one we will be driving for a certain trip, I ask, “Which vehicle are we taking?” and my children do the same. Seriously, this becomes a lengthy debate if “Car” is used.
