Discussion Guidelines
Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!
Spoiler Courtesy
Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags
Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).
Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:
Example
This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.
The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

I wonder: Did the original owners of the house build it all by themselves? If they didn’t every professional would have asked questions about this room layout and the hidden passages.
When I first read about that underground passage between the bathroom and kid’s room and how they would have randomers over in that spare bedroom, I was really scared the story was going to go towards child abuse So I was pretty relieved to find out it was just the kid murdering people instead!
made a big leap in the reason behind the floorplan. But I didn’t suspect him until you guys mentioned it! I was thinking: “no windows?” “secret passage to bath?” “body disposal passage to garage?” This house was built by the loving parents of vampire children who need to be fed…
(I hope I used the “blur spoiler” feature correctly. I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone)
Can somebody explain what those dots mean here exactly? I understand the meaning of the sentence but it’s the first time I encounter this typographic convention:
“Did you know that there are darknet sites that praise murderers? I have bookmarks if you want them, organized by category. So that you can avoid them, of course. Crazy world out there.”
Really enjoying this book so far! I like the conversational style; pretty easy to read. I laughed a lot as the theories kept getting crazier and crazier as more aspects of the floor plan were “revealed” I’m still thinking that surely something else is actually going on… but then the chapter ends like that
I am also really enjoying this book (my first Japanese book !) especially because of the conversational style. I am adding so many useful conversational phrases to ANKI. And also seeing many grammar points “in the wild” which is so great. Before this, I was reading and translating NHK easy news articles and reading Satori stories. Those two sources are excellent for learning grammar, vocabulary etc. But reading a thriller really motivates me to try to read for the sake of following a story. Where you kind of forget you are reading Japanese, and instead you are just reading. I don’t know if that makes sense. Very grateful for finding this reading club
Yeah, no matter what your vocabulary or reading level is, it’s cool to find something where you can reach this state when it clicks and the story starts to move forward for you without needing as much effort. There’s still going to be words to look up probably forever, but the flow state is exciting to find when it does happen.
Worried about accidentally saying something from a future chapter so I’ll just say what I like about this book so far:
It’s super fast paced. No fluff, I like that it’s conversational and keeps the pace going. It’s a bit shorter than some of the other book club readings which I like too. I prefer shorter books that get to the point haha.
Having the important parts in bold text helps with making sure you get the main point!
And they don’t skimp on reshowing the floor plan/drawing out what they’re describing which is very helpful. Especially since on an e-book it’s harder to flip back to keep finding the plans.
