Discussion Guidelines

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice

  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

I’m considering adding more things to the main post such as list of characters, or a vocab sheet, but waiting to see if there will be interest / participation in the club first

I’m suggesting to start middle of August but let me know what you prefer:

  • Middle of July
  • Middle of August
  • Middle of September
  • Middle of October
  • Later than that
  • Some other point in time (please explain)

Should we have a schedule or everybody reads at their own pace?

Pretty excited about this club ! I love all things 東野圭吾 !
As for pace, I don’t mind either way, but I think each to their own pace works especially well when there are not so many participants. I haven’t had a look at the book yet, to see if there are some “natural” break points, which could be used to structure our discussions, regardless of schedule.

I expect there will be numbered ‘chapters’ of varying length, as is his usual style. Hyphens because those feel more like scene breaks than chapters to me.

I voted for a bunch of dates starting from mid August but also for maybe starting a bit late - depends on if I want to get the book before we leave Japan. I was planning on not buying the rest of the series that long before the flight back, but I think volume 2 at least isn’t that thick?

And I can always catch up if need be so I don’t mind either way. ^^

Yay!

Actually this is the only book from the series that is listed as a “short story collection” and not as a novel. I opened the book and looked inside, here is the 目次, which are probably 4 different stories:

  • それぞれの仮面, p.7 (56 pages)
  • ルーキー登場, p.63 (60 pages)
  • 仮面と覆面, p.123 (62 pages)
  • マスカレード・イブ, p.185 (146 pages)

It is “normal” size? 331 pages  it’s the least thick of my collection!

To be honest I might also prefer the September date, I’m not sure I’ll be done with my current reading project (Fata Morgana) by mid August. But at the same time it would make me push myself a bit harder if it’s a tight deadline :grimacing: so both options are good for me.

Later rather than sooner is no problem for me as I am already reading in… 4 book clubs… uh oh…

Haha that’s a known and relatable problem  but who says that if we wait longer, you won’t have had time to join even more book clubs in the meantime

Also tagging @GreenSeaTurtle as I spotted on Natively that marked the book as owned

Guilty as charged…

Looks positively tiny in between those big bois!

And I stand corrected on the chapter thing. I think it came up in the discussion during or after the first book? But I completely forgot.

Those are great to schedule.

So from when to when is your trip to Japan? Do you think you’ll be reading the book there or starting only after?

I’m already in Japan and will leave mid September. As to whether I’ll want to read here, not sure yet! We’re staying mostly in one place from mid August so it’s definitely feasible, but then during the last week we’re here we’ll have to move places 2-3 times, which gets more annoying the more stuff you have. But one smol book won’t break my back, probably.

Will see. If we start in August, it’s quite likely I’ll buy the book then. It’s been too long since I bought any books. :smiling_face_with_tear:

Ah I see! Enjoy your trip, and let’s see for the date! Seems like September also works out OK for everyone, but isn’t it easier to buy the book now if you find it than to import it  it is so tiny

Oh yeah, I’ll definitely buy it in Japan! It’s just a matter of timing. Easiest luggage game would be at the last hotel before the flight back so I just have to move the added weight once. :books: :books:

If it’s just one tiny book, it’s not such a big deal though! I’m not opposed to starting in August either if that’s what the majority wants.

And thanks! I will.

Cool  so far the 3 of us seem to be equally OK for middle or August or middle of September. I’ll give it a couple of weeks to see if anyone else wants to join!
