I couldn’t pause the text during the intro.

There’s an “auto forward” dialogue feature mapped to one of the triggers and I know I’ll keep pressing it on accident (but at least there’s a log so it won’t be a big issue).

I think it’s the same on Steam, from what I remember when I opened the game when I bought it and tried the text hooker. Then I decided to wait until my Japanese was better.
I think next week I will spend some time trying to get the text hooker right.
Also on Steam I can play in English (though that might require to change the language and reinstall the game), we’ll see if it comes in handy if some things are hard to understand.
I think the language will be hard, judging by how many words are unknown to me on JPDB:

Playing a bit around to be ready for when we start…

  • Texthooker seems to work just fine, once the first scene that plays automatically is done
  • I think I have found the backlog but doesn’t show properly, any idea how to fix that?
  • Can’t really find a menu, except if I press Alt, is that normal or does it appear when you are further in the game? Also there the characters are not displayed properly :frowning:

Don’t you have to play with the locale settings to display Japanese correctly on windows?

Yeah system locale was what I was going to suggest because it causes text display issues in some VNs. I don’t have that issue, but I also have the mod installed so mine looks different and I’m already on JP locale.

On mine, the menu is bound to S, for some reason, so give that a shot if you haven’t?

Interesting trick. I followed the steps as described, I can load steam with my other local user thats using Japanese, but no change in game :frowning:

That also doesnt do anything for me. I can go back to the main menu, leave the game, toggle between windowed or full screen, but I cant find how to save :scream:

It won’t fix program displays unless you completely change the system locale; the language of a user doesn’t matter. Which does mean you can have JP locale and English language together on Windows. I don’t think changing locale has many real downsides, except my system clock is on 24 hour display now and that was weird to adjust to at first, haha.

I think I’ve heard of people using a locale emulator too? Sounds like more work than just changing it once, but that might be an option, I just can’t really speak on it beyond having heard it exists, haha.

That’s because most modern programs use Unicode and therefore are locale-agnostic for text (it only matters for currencies, number display, date and time etc…).

But many Japanese programs don’t use Unicode and if you don’t have the right locale the codepoints are interpreted incorrectly by Windows.

It’s a completely trivial thing to fix at the OS level, it’s crazy that windows doesn’t handle it with a simple config menu where you can override the system defaults.

Ooh I see. I think I got mislead by this line in the link “Log in with each user and change the Windows language of that account to the desired language.”
I changed the other user’s system locale to Japanese and now the 2nd problem is also solved :grin:

I’ve changed the system locale on my main user, way easier, works out of the box now! Can’t believe I didn’t know about that before.

So this is roughly twice as much text as we’ve had in the Trails in the Sky club if I’m not mistaken. And it’s probably going to be harder (although I’m not sure about that, I’m mainly judging based on the few sentences I read when I checked that the game worked, but maybe the intro is not representative of the average difficulty of the game). And it’s a VN so no gameplay to relax in between the dialogue sequences.

I’m a little worried about this but we’ll see. At the same time I’ve played like 10 hours of Danganronpa over the past few days so I guess that’s a good warmup.

Not to worry you, but when I played ISLAND, the JPDB count said 664900 char, my own count ended being 885924. I started 1k-2k a day, but after a while could easily do 5k a day, and had some days with 10k / 20k / 50k. (see the graph of the evolution there). 5k/a day is still 134 days, which is 19 weeks or 4 months and a half. Sure there will be days off, but there might be days were you read more too. It’s not that bad, considering that the IBC reads books in 16-19 weeks.
And don’t worry, when you read with nice background music, the hours don’t matter that much, in fact, I almost want to say, the longer the better :grin:

The thing is that I never track how much I read, so it’s a bit tricky for me to have a good idea. If the counts given by @RebBlue actually match what I do read in the game, we do between 7 and 10k a week which I tend to do in two sessions (and it includes gameplay of course), so I guess 5k/day is about right for me. Sometimes I do a single long session but I feel my stamina running out by the end and I lose my focus.

That sounds like a fine pace :slight_smile: we’ll see how it goes. I’ll let you know how many char there is per chapter when we get there, but not expecting to be the fastest reader, right now I still have a lot of book clubs going on, and then I’ll be away from home (and thus from my PC and thus from the VN) quite a bit in the coming months! So probably I’ll be the one with some catching up to do!

Yeah I think the deciding factor for me will be how hard it’s going to be to read, not necessarily the word count. With Danganronpa at the moment I manage to go pretty fast because I do maybe 5 lookups/hour so it’s not too tedious (I don’t understand 100% of what I read but I understand enough to piece the rest together through context). I suspect that it won’t be quite as easy for ファタモルガーナ.

EDIT: amusingly one of the words that gave me trouble at the very start of ファタモルガーナ was 磔, and I just encountered it in danganronpa (but spelled in katakana, ハリツケ).

Not in this club, but I just want you guys to know that I’ve played this in english and it probably took around 40-50 hours. This game is a very slow burn. I’d expect you to be going for over a year and almost everyone to have dropped out before even hitting halfway. :joy: Seriously though, all the power to everyone reading this.

Should maybe also put trigger warnings somewhere in the first post. This game is not for the faint of heart at all. It only gets worse in that regard as you go on. Listing some triggers below in case anyone didn’t know. I went into the game completely blind myself. There are definitely some people who will not want that kind of surprise though.

Murder, torture, suicide, self-harm, sexual assault, child abuse, near sexual assault of a child (I had to include some kind of warning for that last one because that scene in Requiem for Innocence was really bad)

Well at least I don’t see “dating one’s step-brother” listed so it’s probably not as bad as Trails in the Sky. I’m ready for this.
