しらべ
Tough sentence, I’m myself not sure of what 重厚なる規律 is
but I think that 崩壊するしらべ could be the melody that 重厚なる規律 makes when breaking?

I figured just the year, at pretty much 2k characters in, was minor enough, but yeah I covered it now.
There’s always SOMETHING like that in these games when you’re moving slower than expected, haha.
なる in this sort of usage is just a fancy “to be” of sorts, like it could just say 重厚な規律. So that bit is basically just like heavy, imposing order (it’s hard to pick my exact English synonyms because it relies on the rest of the sentence but I imagine you get it, heh)
I’m trying to play this in the Steam version. If I play it in English, I get a menu like this on the top edge of the window, where I can change resolution:
When I play in Japanese, I only get this menu:
No option to change screen resolution, only full screen and window. And the window is small (probably the default setting 800x600).
Have any of you found a way to change the screen resolution on the Japanese versjon?
This looks like the same problem @Akashelia was having – some Japanese programs, including a lot of VNs, don’t display text properly unless you set your computer’s locale to Japan. I’d try to include a link to how to do that but I’m sure it’s different depending on which version of Windows you have.
I don’t mind about the ??? where the text is, I can get around that. But in the English versjon, there is the W Windowed option and the F Full screen option, plus one more option to change the screen resolution. In the Japanese version, I see the F and W options, but not the option to change the window resolution.
I’m honestly not sure beyond that because I installed the mod so my menus and everything are different. Maybe @Akashelia has some advice; her version matches yours.. The only other thing I know is that there’s also an in game menu when you hover in the lower right of the screen, so maybe there’s a resolution option there?
Luna here too, plus JL. Having a hover-able version of the text is a lifesaver! My game looks like this, with the game’s text in the lower part of the screen and JL’s text in the upper part of the screen. I can hover over any kanji or vocab in the JL text and have instant dictionary lookup. Love it!
Thanks! I never would have noticed that menu on my own…
Unfortunately I couldn’t find an option to change window size there either. But Luna plus JL work well with this VN, and then I can play in full screen. I’ll try that for now!
A quick search led me to this, where someone is saying the Japanese version is different and lacking the option. That’s really bizarre. 800x600 is the actual resolution of the original art so larger would be blowing it up beyond native, but I still imagine that’s a pretty annoyingly small window. This is the main reason I went with the mod honestly.
Thank you for this! It works OK in full screen, so I’ll just go with that. I’m glad to see that I wasn’t crazy when I didn’t find the screen resolution button in the Japanese version though!
I haven’t tried changing the size so not sure if it’s possible, I only noticed that the Window mode is quite small. I play full screen as I have two other monitors.
As @Daisoujou said if you want to fix the ??? (can be useful for the backlog), you change the System locale to Japanese:
This is what it looks like for me (minus the copyright thing in the corner that seems to be added automatically by the Switch screenshot feature):
Unless I have the wrong line, it looks like they revised the script and decided that 囀る was better left in kana…
Also I’ll add 薔薇 to my kanji deck because it comes up surprisingly often.
I think that was the line, yeah. I had it in kanji too. Interesting.
Agreed, definitely worthwhile. I ended up mining 11 new words out of what I went through so far.
Ah maybe it was this instead:
Also I’m happy to report that many of the “complicated” non-WK, non-jouyou kanji so far are already in my deck, it feels good when hard work pays off. I could read 頬を撫でる (or whatever the sentence was) first try! Our good friend 頷く also makes an appearance. Crazy that WK teaches 肯く instead.
Great job! I’m feeling similarly; this would’ve been way harder for me in the past and it’s still a little dense with the kind of stuff I need to reach more to recall, but I’m pretty well prepared by now.
I had forgotten about this I guess, but yeah, that’s ridiculous. The first one is in pretty much every long form piece of writing ever, repeatedly and the latter… I’ve probably seen it? I think?
Ok I’m done with the garden scene. I’ll leave it there for now. I can’t believe we get weird incest vibes from the very first scene. REEEEE
I really like the music and the voices are distorted enough that I can’t really understand most of the words anyway. During the intro I could make out some verses but in the garden I can’t even tell what language is supposed to be.
Yes the chirp is latter, can see that I got that exact same line, with the kana form:
鳥のさえずりも、風に揺られる草木も、動物の気配も……
Got the kanji twice though, the one you mentioned, and also when we see Nellie for the first time
――♪ ――……♪
小鳥が囀るように軽やかに歌いながら、深紅のオールドローズを摘む少女を、ネリーといいました。
You should make a 図鑑 like me :)) only got 烏 as a new name this time around, we’ll see if there’s going to be more. With 薬屋のひとりごと I get a new word for my 図鑑 (usually a plant or a mineral) at every page haha.
Nice! You got further than me already, probably further than 5k! (also looks like you finished pretty late )
I completely agree. Seems to be book specific if people prefer to use one or the other. It was there plenty in あなたも殺人犯になれる while 頷 was there 0 times.
I’m too lazy to assemble this kinda thing; I can’t even be bothered to put pictures on my Anki cards. But it’s super cool to look at and I think it’s awesome you’re doing it.
Honestly I’m surprised you have as much variety as you do, cause I feel like it’s massively weighted to 頷く in my experience. One of those biases about what exactly you read, huh.
I was already thinking it’s super funny given you brought up the Trails FC thing. Questionable sibling closeness is basically becoming a Japanese domain we have lots of experience with! You know… there’s a brother and sister who are right from the beginning close in an uncomfortable way in Hundred Line, so I’m reading 3 of these things at once. Starting to feel like that astronaut gun meme.
oh you will not believe how happy i am with the fact that i was able to follow the whole intro without having to look up any words at all to understand the sentences
i’ve played the game before in English too, so context definitely does carry over
i’m sure i could’ve mined some words from the prologue, like adjectives to describe the era behind the first door, but as soon as i saw that the last comma separated one was 素晴らしい i was like “okay, im good, i get the idea” xddd
also, one really underappreciated benefit of the routine im having right now is that i read about as fast as a narrator would, so i don’t spend forever on a screen, and I don’t slow down on a word if I don’t the reading or the meaning the first time, so for example the autoscrolled intro animation felt very much reasonably paced and speeded for me
…so far I’m feeling pretty optimistic about the game, but life is getting in the way and I might not have an update on my playthrough until Sunday-ish, we’ll see how I do in that case ^^
Good luck on the book club everyone! We can do this ^^
Yeah would probably make more sense to look at general frequency numbers than only at the numbers from my own reads haha
Wow nice!! Good job! And nice that you’ve found some time to play already!
