ゼノギアス // Week 8 // Chapter 13

Plot and Pacing

I can see where you are coming from with this, though I think this particular case was just us stopping for the week exactly when the plot wanted us to advance. With the weekly scheduled format this inevitably happens every now and then… We were not done with ラムサス and ミァン yet even for time being.

Overall, the writers feel confident in juggling multiple story and character threads at once – much more so than other games of this era. This game has its flaws for sure, but at least for me this is a cornerstone strong point for the game – you can count on it being ambitious. The huge cast combined with the in medias res style opening act kind of necessitates this sense of bewilderment, but I also feel the writers are most definitely doing it on purpose – they want to hook us in.

I also get the sense now playing this in Japanese that the storytelling is even more implicit than I previously thought. I’m not sure if it’s the language that relies on omission or just me being 25 years older and picking up on things I previously wasn’t ready for. Probably both.

This week’s introduction scene for ラムサス and ミァン left a strong impression on me, and especially how it paints シャーカーン being so subservient to ゲブラー. They are not equal allies by any means – but that also creates the dynamic where シャーカーン is seeking for ways to even the odds… as we saw.

In modern games we would have journals and quest logs making sure we don’t miss anything salient. I love that Xenogears doesn’t do that for us – it expects the player to keep these threads in their heads. Our weekly format increases the challenge, as details submerge into subconsciousness over time… I’m taking a ton of screenshots and there’s also the script to fall back on.

My personal reading is that releasing マルー from ファティマ城 is for now the clear main thread, with the surrounding mystery around 『ファティマの碧玉』 being the bigger overall driver. ラムサス, ミァン and シャーカーン are also looking for it…

フェイ is still in a shocked state, despite taking some steps towards firmer ground. At least he no longer feels suicidal.

Then there’s the constantly increasing list of other threads to pull from in the future… starting from the mundane “why is シタン called ヒューガ by シグルド and how do they know each other?” all the way to the god-killing business.

Yup! And also introduce whole new threads to clear up. Very early days still.

Almost finished this part, just missing some little things…

Week 8

This week was a lot of fun, so many fun little interactions and things to discover!
I’m a bit worried about how many people recognise Bart however… You would think he would try to keep it a bit more secret…
But if you have him get recognised by the old guy at the entrance of the market he gives some funny info…

  • I enjoyed all the little shops and vendors approaching you… That shop selling ラハン vegetables is going to have his stock shoot up in prices… So of course I bought them.
I’m not sure if Fei would find it nostalgic or it would just trigger more trauma…
  • My favourite little discovery was the restaurant where you can eat fish to restore HP… and gain weight depending on what you order, which I’m still not quite sure I understood what it does. I assume it slightly changes stats when fighting on foot? Does it makes you slower but raises attack?
  • I gave the toy to the bird kid at the fair and he said something interesting…
  • Was really amused by Fei randomly learning to breathe fire by some girl at the fair… Sadly you can only do it there. It would have been fun if this small interaction unlocked a random optional idle animation… Or a Deathblow!! He can already fire energy beams anyway I guess…
  • Not quite sure what is up with the cold/hot food you can eat at the food stall…
  • The mental image of Fei getting totally drunk and stumbling around the plaza breathing fire and holding a balloon (totally not what I ended up doing) was really funny. This guy is supposed to be the god slayer or whatever…
  • All the houses and places you can enter were quite interesting… But all the small mentions of all the people that have died in the war were pretty sad… I also gave that old man a scare by making him think his son had come back…

As for plot, I really liked the camera zooms during that cutscene but I had to yomitan a bit of the dialogue from the script. All the vague name dropping admittedly kinda flew over my head but I’m focusing more on the immediate short term plot of saving the girl and the fact that the bad guys duo are looking for the other part of the 碧玉. The reveal that were watching the scene in the room from a camera was really cool!

Happy new year everyone!

Been laid up by a nasty cold, and got behind my planned reading for this and the last haul for 2025 bingo. Oh well.

week 8

The contrast between how Ramsus treats Maru and Shakan is hilarious. The fact that Shakan has a camera in her room is not.

First impression is I like Maru.

Now that I played it, the detailed key route early seems to be beat H&S kid->Talk to him near the east well (might not be needed?)->Talk to the kid near the west sewer gate (who was the one who got lost and made them lock it up in the first place? Lol)–>Talk to the sitting old man near the East well. You can tell him you’ll rescue Maru OR (I found after reading the script) tell him you’re going to rob the castle, at which point Bart’s ID gets revealed…again. He kinda bad at disguise, probably because he didn’t use any.

I’ll be playing week 9 tomorrow I think. I’ve still got to prep for week 10, as I’m also behind on that

I am REALLY liking how lived in an vibrant the devs made this world. The textures, the little details, the text boxes popping up and overlapping. It’s probably my favorite thing. There’s so much personality!

On another note, this week made me realize using the script for word count isn’t great, although I don’t have a better method. In weeks like this one where you get alternative scenarios depending on who you talk to when and what choices you select, the mutually exclusive scenes make it so the word count is inflated…
