Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you’re familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Fairly easy chapter this week (lots of text-less panes too)

First time I’ve come across the expression 「腕の見せ所」, which I’m guessing means something like “A chance to show off my skills”?

yesss i loved the chapter this week !! i like the pun in the title ..

this manga is finished and is only two volumes long, right ? i’m curious how it’s going to wind up being structured. i like these fun little short stories, but i assume we’re going to have to learn some more stuff about anri soon..
also when i saw オーダー on the shop sign in the first chapter, i didn’t twig that that actually meant ordering shoes made from scratch. i called anri a cobbler in the previous thread, but i’m pretty sure cobblers only repair shoes.. so i guess she would be considered a ‘shoemaker’ in english ? that must be a very rare profession nowadays, especially people doing it independently.. it’s cool !!

I think I would have probably enjoyed this manga OK as a child. As an adult however, I can’t help but thinking “oh these must be expensive to make” but we don’t see her being paid for her hard work.. Hm, maybe I’ll have to tell myself that the setting is in a fairy world or something.

Wait wat?

Is that how it is? Not sure if I missed something, but nothing in the chapter seemed to imply that she did it for free. Certainly there’s no explicit panel where they discuss payment or where we see her receive it, but I don’t see why we would assume it didn’t happen?

In Ch. 1 Anri mentions that her earning for the day were a single candy, which implicitly means she actually counts her earnings, which implies she actually gets paid (some days)

No I’m not saying that she is always doing it for free. Technically in chapter 2 she maybe even gets paid, as we kind of skip from the boy liking the shoes, to him holding them in a bag and saying thanks and bye, so in between, maybe he paid. However, in both episodes, we never see her getting money, is what I’m saying. But we do see her living alone, with a fridge pretty much empty, she is disabled, and her family members are possibly dead. Just feel bad that we don’t see her getting money, when she puts all her heart in making something nice for customers, plus time and resources.

For maximum cozy vibes I recommend reading while listening to smooth jazz and sitting by a window on a rainy day.

I’d say in Ch 2 she got paid, and the transaction isn’t shown but rather implied since that would be normal for someone going through her sales from scratch. Whereas with the little girl it shows the payment to show Anri’s heart that even though she’s not making a great living she still helped her out (given she wouldn’t have been expecting payment from the start), and the little girl still thought of the payment in her own way.

That’s how I interpreted it!

(Not really a spoiler but a comment about the format): Although the manga looks episodic it’s not, it’s just laying some premise.
