よつばと! Reading club

Oh no, I had no idea and missed it completely!

PS - the art work looks a bit different I think to the first few volumes (I have no idea what happens in between mind you!) but the drawings in there of Ometesando and Harajuku are worth the price of the book alone!

Yeah, Azuma-sensei improves quite a bit in skill over time. Even comparing volumes one and four of Azumanga Daioh, there’s a huge difference between them.

I know! I was so happy!

I’ve just posted the following to the Beginner’s Book Club thread, but it is just as relevant here. The short version is the idea of setting up a reading group that true low-level beginners can join, and I think I’ve found just the book…

So, I’ve struggled through three and a half volumes of Yotsuba with the Yotsuba Reading Club here (which is amazing and full of the most wonderful, most kind, most patient people you could imagine) but it is a struggle… Yotsuba is still far too difficult for me (and full of slang that I should not be learning) and so really I need something easier.

I do not want to learn from a text book, I couldn’t think of anything worse, but finding a good book for low levels is tough… but I think I’ve found one! I started reading it today and it is brilliant! Just the right level for me, with just the right amount of challenge and a lot, a lot, of fun!

Here’s the book: にゃんにゃん探偵団

I know it will be far too easy for most people in this group, and for most people on WK, but for true beginners, it is perfect. And it’s a mystery… with cats!

Could we set up a new group, the “Just getting started with Japanese reading group” or something like that, and read this book? It’s perfect for those of us for whom Yotsuba is too difficult but who desperately want to read real Japanese.

Hi! I started reading Yotsuba not too long ago and, I must say, these threads are really helpful to to solidify understanding and correct misconceptions! When do you guys plan to start vol. 5? Currently read through 2, going to start 3 today, but need to order past that (since I didn’t think I’d read this fast!)

Sorry if this is easily available somewhere, I basically just woke up and still don’t have all my wits about me

I want to read Yotsuba again too. Oh and I need volume 14. I am getting all excited again.

Don’t think there is any precise plan at the moment. We’re just taking a short breather.

@BobaGakusei?

I’m getting less active on WaniKani in general, so I am no longer the best person to run this. Any volunteers?

I would be up for running it if we need someone.

Want to make sure I understand the responsibilities - basically posting the thread, updating the links, creating vocab tabs, posting the chapter links on the scheduled day?

Yes, that is essentially what I have been doing.

Per volume:

  • Determine when to start via discussion or via poll
  • Create thread to organize the info (copy-paste from prior volume; then update schedule, picture, and volume references)

Per week:

  • Post to start the new chapter, linking to the vocab list
  • Update the thread OP post

Okay, I’m happy to do that unless anyone else would really like to.

And so…

When would you like to start up again with Volume 5?
(You can choose multiple days that are good for you)

  • July 15th
  • July 22nd
  • July 29th
  • August 5th
  • August 12th

I’m not going to vote on the poll because I haven’t caught up yet but I’m nearly done with volume 3 (reading the last chapter today and tomorrow), and I think I’ll catch up to 5 at some point during the readalong. I’m excited to be able to participate in a more timely manner soon!!

Okay, it looks like maybe we’ve got the votes we’re going to get on the poll.

August 5th is technically the winner, and it’s sort of in the middle time-wise (July 29th would probably be the other “compromise” choice in the end).

Let’s start August 5th unless anyone has a particular objection. I’ll get the thread up and post the dates sometime this week.
