外がわ is outside and 内がわ is inside I think.
The 「がわ」is actually still part of a word along with 外. 外がわ・外側 means ‘outside’ or ‘exterior’

If なく is indicating that, then ‘without’ would be better phrasing here. Good suggestion.

Also… I would like someone to explain to me the phrase with the californian sushi in a more detailed fashion please. I get the general gist of it but I was not able to make it in a proper sentence and I still cannot.
