Just curious, why is the movie called 君の名は instead of あなたの名は? Isn’t きみ used for talking to an inferior? I’m confused.

IIRC, きみ is used more by teenage boys, such as using おれ as a personal pronoun. I believe there’s a part in the movie where the girl character as the boy is unsure of what pronoun to use, so you may be aware of that. (I haven’t seen the movie).
I believe it’s also used in a more masculine sense than あなた. In general, あなた is more polite and formal.

きみ is usually used to address the other in a couple in stead of names. Using other pronouns such as あなた is perfectly fine too, but it is more formal. So the title is (probably) used to convey a special relation between the two protagonists.

Yeah, 君 is commonly used as casual language by younger men towards addressing young women they’re friends (or more) with.

Ok, you definitely need to see the movie. It’s the movie that motivated me to progress in my Japanese studies!
Also, like with other artistic pursuits such as song lyrics etc a movie title can just be an aesthetic choice, ie the writer thought that 君の名は was pleasantly brief and mysterious and sounded nicer. Something like a movie title isn’t always going to be most correct or whatever so much as something marketable and interesting and/or pretty looking. An example of this I guess would be 化物語 which is a jamming together of ばけもの、monster, and ものがたり、tale/legend. It’s as much a creative decision as anything else.

For some reason this reminds me of the film “Warfighter” which they fought looked cool ,but it’s actually very stupid (in my opinion).
There was also a ‘medal of honour: Warfighter’ game which i believe is unrelated .
Sadly there was no copyright court case over who got to keep the ridiculous name. if there was, i imagine a 9 year old would probably have won after writing a short story of the same name for homework.

You don’t happen to watch Yatzhee Croshaw by any chance? I remember him mocking the medal of honor: warfighter name for the same reason haha. Hurr durr man fight war durr warfighter herp
What I don’t get is why the movie is called “きみのなは”, but the characters actually say “きみのなまえは”! I guess the title was just an artistic choice, but actually having the characters talk that way would sound too weird.
People don’t really say 名 when asking for someone’s name. Also I’m pretty sure the title is meant to be a sort of pun. 縄 (なわ) read the same as 名は means “rope” and the movie uses ropes/threads quite a bit.

Because 君の名は sounds like a title. 君の名前は sounds too much like just something someone would say.
The fact that those sound the same isn’t lost on Japanese people (there’s plenty of bondage porn parody material), but I don’t think that was what the author was going for in the title.

Every now and then I’ll catch up on his stuff, but since I’m mostly just on YouTube and i think he’s still just on escapist i don’t keep up to date with him.
I’m not surprised he mocked that game name though.
At least the ‘Warface’ developers have the excuse of being Russian .
