EN summary

Best-selling Japanese manga that has been adapted into multiple awards-winner anime. The story of a doctor and his recently-deceased patient reborn as twins to a famous Japanese musical idol, Ai Hoshino, and navigate the highs and lows of the Japanese entertainment industry as they grow up together through their lives.

The fourth volume is the least dense volume of 推しの子 to date, with an average density of 18.80 words per page across the whole volume.

Hint! If you’re having difficulties reading at difficulty levels as high as this one, the best way to make your life easier is by scraping your manga with a script, such as this for Bookwalker, and then running manga through a script such as Mokuro in order to enable lookups of the more specific terminology.

Since this is a speed run book club, the formal end of this book club will occur on 2026-01-27T14:59:00Z, but feel free to continue with us afterwards, and if you’d be interested in continuing with a spin-off book club for the remaining volumes, let us know and the threads can be created!

Still with us on the book club?

  • I’ll be joining together with the book club!
  • Joining after the book club has finished!
  • I’ve read the manga in the past already!
  • I’m reading the manga in other languages, but I still want to discuss!
  • Just lurking/discussing the plot!

Some spoiler thoughts after the four chapters:

Volumes 4 spoilers

As a person who really relies on intrinsic motivation for the moral compass myself, this volume was really hard in terms of me wanting to extend much compassion to かな, I was grinding my teeth and going like “JUST SUCK IT UP AND KEEP GOING”, and when it did feel like others were necessary to keep her going, I was feeling a little uncomfortable

In part that’s the reason why I like ルビー and MEM much more, they just want to do stuff, and even if they can’t be as good as かな first try, they eventually will get there, because they don’t focus on self-pity as much

this definitely is my internal bias though, and I still don’t know where does あかね fall onto this radar, because she starts off as really co-dependent, but then resolves as her own character really quickly

I still have 君に届け to finish, so I’ll probably jump to that book club next!

Thanks for reading 推しの子 together with me! C:
