❄️ 2025 Winter Solstice 24-hour Readathon

:milky_way::snowflake: Final Results

A massive thank you to everyone who participated despite the untimeliness of the readathon/holiday collision :man_bowing: Before every readathon I get a wave of imposter syndrome where I convince myself that no one will participate because reading is for boring nerds, and then every single time I’m met with a massive group of incredibly inspirational readers who remind me that it’s actually totally fine and normal to read until brain go boom. THANK YOU for being here, whether you stop in at every event or just once in a while. It’s way more fun to read alongside you :books: :two_hearts:

The Summer Solstice event earlier this year was the most-participated event ever, with 47 finishers, and followed by a robust Autumn Equinox roster of 40 finishers. Forty-plus people on a tiny corner of the internet, clearing schedules for an entire day to just read together, sharing panels and excerpts and snack photos and travel photos, it really feels like a family event :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Well, yes, that’s all very nice. Except the Winter Solstice had 52 finishers, so we actually managed to set a record this past weekend :sob: :exclamation_question_mark: What do you mean FIFTY-TWO people happened to squeeze 24 hours out of busy family and work and life schedules to decipher kanji with internet strangers?? And we can’t have a record number of participants without setting some reading records as well, of course.

Results!! Here are the raw numbers from each readathon from the past year, chronologically:

Event Finishers Time Pages Charas
:snowflake: Winter '24 22 137:26:00 4632 252.3k
:tulip: Spring '25 32 164:29:00 8204 161.8k
:sunny: Summer '25 47 251:50:00 11607 151.6k
:maple_leaf: Autumn '25 40 213:11:00 7396 555.4k
:snowflake: Winter '25 52 295:25:00 11076 817.7k

:x: Beating the goal by a little
:check_mark: Beating the goal BY A LOT

Where we usually do well in primarily one category, in this event we crushed expectations across all contingents of time, pages, and characters. I’m so proud and reverent of everyone this winter solstice :face_holding_back_tears:

Regarding per-reader averages, I truthfully expected this event to be near the bottom of the rankings. Even though the raw numbers were so high, they were spread across the largest number of participants yet and would almost assuredly translate to lower numbers per person. Except not at all! Our numbers were so impressive that the math continued to favor us, ranking us second behind the longtime first-place holdout: last winter’s event :star_struck:

We’ll get you someday…

:checkered_flag: Event Avg. Time Avg. Pages Avg. Charas
:1st_place_medal: :snowflake: Winter '24 6:10:00 210 11.4k
:2nd_place_medal: :snowflake::tada: Winter '25 :tada: 5:54:00 213 15.7k
:3rd_place_medal: :sunny: Summer '25 5:21:00 247 3.2k
:maple_leaf: Autumn '25 5:20:00 185 13.9k

Now, usually, I’d use the space under our rankings to do shoutouts for users who made big progress or hit big numbers. But, if it’s okay, I’d like to pause the usual shoutout section and instead share a few of the moments from this readathon that made it so obvious to me why reading with you all is such a privilege and is so inspiring:

Holiday cheer!!

This was yet another fantastic weekend reading with the WK forum community, thank you so much for joining me and for helping each other find joy in the process of improving. Wishing a beautiful holiday season to everyone here :sparkles::clinking_glasses: :champagne: May your new year’s resolutions be exciting and self-forgiving and include something about reading more Japanese in 2026 :see_no_evil_monkey:

The next readathon will take place on Saturday, March 21, 2026!

Hope to see you then!! :nerd::books::blossom::cherry_blossom:

Thank you for organizing one of the most anticipated community events, while applying to doctoral programs AND taking the JLPT :face_with_spiral_eyes:

It was a blast as usual, and the best part is seeing everyone blow past their own expectations for how much they’ll be able to read! Onward to Spring!

I do think that’s how people outside of here see me
Do I mind though? Nope!

So nice! I hope more people will keep joining and reading! Thanks again @taiyousea, and big congrats everyone!!

Amazing wrap-up post to conclude the readathon! I love your holiday cheer call-outs and I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy going into Christmas :christmas_tree: :snowman: :santa_claus:

Thanks @taiyousea for being such a star and pulling us all together. Three cheers for tai!

:megaphone: :glowing_star: :tada:

Take care everyone!

Thank you so much for organising this Taiyousea!

I absolutely love taking part in these throughout the year and they remind me why I got into learning Japanese in the first place.

Such a nice motivation boost to know we’re all in it together :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

What a lovely way to conclude the readathon! Nerds - maybe, but boring - definitely not. Thank you again tai for hosting and congrats all! I’m so glad I participated in summer, these are such great progress checks and it’s so much fun to read how much everyone is progressing.

I still cannot fathom how anyone could read >12 hours so I will do my own unofficial not-tai-approved shoutouts to @Ditto20 @GolyBidoof and @Akashelia for setting ridiculously ambitious times that I can only dream of.

Happy Christmas :christmas_tree:

This was my first time ever doing something like this and I’ve been gushing about it to anyone who will listen for the past 3 days!!! This was a confidence booster and inspiration combo pack! I’ve been continuing to read since the event ended and finished my first full manga volume ever this evening.

Thanks for putting this together! Best part of my holiday season thus far. Can’t wait until the spring event!

Thank you @taiyousea for hosting such a lovely event, it was incredibly fun joining in and reading with everyone and I’m really looking forward to the next one (I will be there so long as circumstances allow). I’m genuinely so happy I found this community and have fellow Japanese enthusiasts to talk to and read with, since my family members don’t understand  They likely think I’m a nerd but hey, I think that’s a wonderful thing.

I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas :blue_heart:

This was a super fun event, thank you for setting it up!

Happy Holidays everyone and I can’t wait for the next one!

Can’t wait for the day we surpass one million characters

The number of characters really varies from screen to screen though. A decent portion of some of the chapters in this batch were characters grunting and screaming oh no

I’ll see what I can do, but I suspect I wouldn’t have the chance to estimate it before editing closes

Edit: Yep, it closed days ago lol

You could ask tai to add it for you :durtle_the_explorer:

@taiyousea, if I make an estimate of the characters in my video game, would it be possible to add them to the final count? If it’s too late, I totally understand!

Thank you for the suggestion!

Yes! Sorry, I’ve been intermittently online this week. Feel free to post your numbers and I will add them to the overall results list. I won’t alter the averages or standings because it defeats the purpose of a deadline, but I’m happy to make sure your numbers get recorded in the community tally post.

100% unrelated, but I always like the way how the results tables look like, and since I love big data, i cleaned up the data manually, updated everyone’s usernames to the most recent ones, decided to create a small script to aggregate data of people participating in WaniKani marathons across different iterations of it and generate a small results card anyone can put in your study log or something ^^

For example, the forum-wide stats for Winter:

or Akashelia’s status:

It also has some participation charts and links to the posts if provided in the results table, for example here’s RedGlare:

The charts look really cool if you’re somebody like soggyboy and you’ve participated in all of the marathons so far!

But I decided against adding any leaderboards and comparing against other people, after all, we’re supposed to be challenging ourselves, not competing with one another ^^

Feel free to play around with the graphs!
