really happy to have participated yesterday! Clocked at least 10 additional hours in Harukanaru Toki no naka de 7, leading to a total of about 80 logged hours in the game so far! I’ve done the readathon a few times now, and what’s cool about having it be solstice related is that each time my abilities have significantly improved. I think my first readathon I was finishing up my first Otome game kiniro no corda, and now im on my…4th I think?
me yesterday^ helping potato cultivation to prevent Japan starvation during the Sengoku period with Naoe Kanetsugu lmao otherwise known as this fine gentleman
So I was reading through others and saw people comparing their previous results to now, for me from fall 2024 I just did 5 hr 30 min and I was beat!! so I’ve about doubled my reading stamina since then lets gooo
I ended up having more time than I though I would, because it’s the weekend so I didn’t have to do class work! This was the first time I recorded time for all reads too. I kept my reading sessions under an hour, so I didn’t get too distracted.
Usually I track pages for manga, but since our page count goal is looking good, and I read Noragami on Mokuro, I decided to use the character count instead.
Second update
Things are going well so far, currently at 5 hours read and 167 pages into NO. 6 volume 1. Just about 46 pages to go! But it is super late and I’m way to sleepy to keep going so hopefully I can finish it up in my remaining time in the morning (actually afternoon my sleep schedule is not doing so hot )
Anyway, had breakfast and did all my morning tasks, so it’s back onto the readathon for day 2. My 24 hour period started at 8pm yesterday, so I have just over 6 hours of potential readathon time left today.
Today is starting with more Frieren, volume 9 this time.
Picking up where I left off yesterday, so コミック百合姫2025年2月
Will keep on updating this post as I go!
It’s 14:31 local time, have less than 8 hours to go, hoping for at least a decent hour or two of reading in the marathon. Timer on, let’s go!
Chapter 14: 22 min
Chapter 15: 16 min
Chapter 16: 35 min
Chapter 17: 33 min
Chapter 18: 22 min
Chapter 19: 13 min
Chapter 20: 6 min
Chapter 21: 9 min
Epilogue: 20 min
Total: 9h 50 min
I finished book? I finished book! I still have an hour left of my 24h… What.
Are you still feeling like you could read on after all those hours??
Also, update time~
It’s a bit past 22pm, almost 12 hours into my 24hr window.
After dinner🍕 I went pretty much straight back to 百年文通 - which I have now finished! The remaining 56 percent took me 137 minutes. Total time for ‘130’ imaginary Kindle pages: 4hrs 1min or 241 minutes.
I’m definitely tired at this point. Not to the point that I can’t of don’t want to read anymore, but I’d definitely appreciate something light to read now.
Thanks! Haha, I’ve already cracked open Kusuriya 15, 問題ない Just a bit hungry despite all the snacking. In just a few hours I’ll probably get sleepiness looming again. I doze off easily while reading in the evening.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
is my current mental state.
Approaching the end of the challenge. If there’s one thing I know about myself it’s that under no circumstances will I be waking up early tomorrow to read before the deadline, so it’s all about what I finish before bed.
Under said circumstances, novel reading is finished for the day, methinks. This part of 運転者 wasn’t so bad. I should probably focus on manga from now on to get to my goals. If I need a changeup in the next 2 hours or so before bed, I’ll probably do a bit more ひぐらし. Now quick little 5 min break and onwards again!
Quick aside about comparisons to last time. My comparisons of stats aren’t going to be that much use, because I’m reading different stuff at a different rate. The main thing which is going to be my conclusion is that this time has just felt so much easier. I remember last time where I managed to read a lot, with medium to good comprehension, and it feeling very hard. I was so tired, it was really a challenge to push myself through. This, by comparison, has felt honestly pretty darn easy. I don’t think there’s a single thing in the roughly lvl30+ stuff I’ve been reading today which has felt hard at all (other than the odd sentence or two). Just being able to comfortably, easily read at this level (and still be probably 20-25% faster with much better comprehension) is all the progress I need. Even if the stats won’t reflect it, the literal hundreds of hours spent reading since last readathon really do show up in how I perceive the reading.
My time was up when I reached page 37 of chapter 10 (3rd? chapter) of ガイコツ書店員 本田さん volume 2 at 12:00 today.
My reading time was 6 hours and 18 minutes in total and during that I read a total of 448 manga pages.
Goals
Finish ふたりのライオン Finish volume 1 of ガイコツ書店員 本田さん
Finish volume 2 of ガイコツ書店員 本田さん
Honda-san was still lookup heavy and difficult for my current knowledge (rated N2 level on Natively whereas I’d put myself at a lower N3 level) but I don’t regret picking it as I wanted something silly, and on that front it delivered.
This manga having Furigana helped a lot too because I didn’t have to write out as many Kanji when looking things up manually. Otherwise, my progress would have been even slower and I might not have finished volume 1.
While I didn’t reach all of my goals, I’m perfectly fine with that as I wasn’t even sure how much reading I could handle these days.
This Readathon very much evoked a feeling of summer with all the brain melting – admittedly, not just because of the heat – cold beverages, food and snacks. The many mentions of pizza in particular made me envious and the mental image of @dunlewy dual-wielding bacon sandwiches while reading was another highlight. Thank you for that.
I liked seeing several people noticing their improvements for their reading speed compared to past challenges. It’s just really satisfying, isn’t it?
Big congrats to you and congrats to everyone who participated for the first time or for yet another time!
I’ll keep an eye on this thread for any progress updates by those of you who are still in the midst of their reading. Have fun and please stay hydrated!
Finished the readathon by reading 26 pages of the kid’s book 呪われた少年.
I’m very glad I changed to this last minute from what I had originally intended to read. This book felt like it hit that mythical sweet spot that people mention in Comprehensible Input videos, so reading it was actually really fun, and it’s by far the longest I’ve been able to read prose for so far! Going to take a bit of a break now but I’ll be getting back to it later on today
Comparing to my results from the Winter 2024 Readathon, my reading speed seems actually a bit slower, but I’m putting that down to back then I was doing a lot more skimming over stuff I didn’t understand and also the fact it’s been so warm during this challenge I kept being on the brink of dozing off
Regardless, I’m happy with how the challenge went, thank you @taiyousea for arranging
Decided to read ルックバック given it’s been one of those things I’ve been meaning to get to for a while.
It’s kind of just what I needed right now. Short, easy, sweet, emotional. Right when I got near the end, something flew into my eyes and had me sweating from both of them. Trust.
That puts me past the time goal for today. This is I think the second last update. I reckon I probably am going to finish off ナナ (maybe just under an hour left) and then call it there with update 10. Assuming I manage to do that, that’ll be all the goals I set out for myself complete. I’ll save any more thoughts for when I get there.
Thank you all for reading, commenting, participating along and making this by far the best community event of the year. If you’re still going or starting soon, がんばってね!
I just need to do some math but I’m exhausted now. For whatever reason, someone decided to metalwork from around my last update until 10:30pm?? Earlier today someone was letting their screaming child play in the street (literally idk why they didn’t go to the park, the kid was screaming for hours. It wouldn’t take hours to reach the park…).
I didn’t get in 2 chapters of JoJo like I wanted but oh well. I’ll be going to bed at a decent time and be ready for work in the morning.
Thank you so much for continuing to host the challenge, @taiyousea !
Frieren volume 9 finished, in 1hr40 minutes. Realised I’d added up my manga pages wrong too.
Anyway, quick break for lunchtime while I ponder my next action. Options are frieren volume 10 (volume 9 did end on a cliffhanger), restart digimon survive or start pokemon shield.
Nice long sleep last night and I’m feeling refreshed and ready to read this morning! Lots of fun reading all the updates that were posted overnight! Now I’m settled in with coffee and about to get back into CardCaptor Sakura V.4. 9 hours available for reading today before my 24-hrs are up!
During this readathon I wanted to challenge myself by trying to finish Kusuriya 14 (408 pages) within 24 hours. Aaaand I did it I started yesterday (Sat 21st) 16:00 and read until I reached 44%. Then today (Sun 22nd), I started reading again around 8:30 and finished the book by 15:00.
Total time spent: 9h 50 min. That’s an average pace of 40 pages per hour.
(Hmm …Why am I scared? )
Also started reading Kusuriya 15. It’s just 259 pages.
Chapter 1: 0% 4% → 11%. Time 27 min. → 13% Total time: 35 min.
Edit: Chapter 1 started at 4%. So total of 9% of book read.
