Yeah!
So sometimes, you’ll have words that are very very similar, but have the slightest difference.
For my example, 里 (さと) can mean village, or hometown. BUT it does not mean “villager”. Villager is 村人 (むらびと).
There are better versions of examples, but this is just the one that comes to mind for me.
Sometimes, certain words can be so similar in meaning but far off in nuance that they might be debatable as to if they really mean the same exact thing (like how there are two ways to say “think” in Japanese, and the difference between them is actually very important at least to a degree).
It’s just that sometimes typos can be accepted because of wanikani’s really cool typo-catcher (that really helps a lot!), but that the typo-catcher can sometimes allow certain words/typos to pass through that actually really make a whole lot of difference, like if you keep thinking 里 means “villager”, you’re going to have trouble or confusion down the line at some point in time.

For example, “north” and “south” are similar enough in spelling to each be accepted as “close enough” answers for the other. Ditto for “east” and “west”.

Accepted “valley” for 麦 when I confused it with 谷, being close enough to one of its meanings, “barley”.

I didn’t take a screenshot, but 向こう accepted “over here”…
What on earth should this have been? I’m amazed it was accepted.
