One day, when we have the time to remake the landing page, it’s going to say “Learn 2,000 kanji and 6,000 vocabulary words in just over 2.5 average human lifetimes,” and then finally, it will be accurate.
(but seriously, as I grow old and decrepit, my preferences in marketing have become more grumpy and reality-bent, or something like that, so if we redid that page it’d be closer to the “this is going to be really hard, are you sure you meant to come here?” with an asterisk leading to something saying “there are people who finish this whole thing in just over a year, but they’re all crazy.”)
Response very much appreciated, so appreciated even that I drew an awesome picture of me frolicking with it under the sun. You can put it on the fridge if you want but no pressure.
Though I don’t know if I can say I am fully onboard with all the trains of thoughts presented here interface-wise, business-wise, and logistics-wise. Especially that bit about the gifs- it is always appropriate to use 2012 memes.
I did promise, though, to be patient (and I don’t think I myself am going to be changing the general course of action by any means, anyways) so I will step back and see how things cook up for the time being.
I will say it would be very, very appreciated if the “for a bit” is implying there is more direct room for applicable constructive feedback once things come along so if the change ultimately has bones-to-be-picked-with we (the community and devs) can hopefully find better mutual middlegrounds.
Until then I will… keep paying for and using your service because I really like it. Thanks again
I feel like the old Wanikani from 2 months ago was absolute perfection while the new stuff and upcoming ideas seems like something that the suits came up with. Kinda like vanilla WoW vs the present day version (having 60 levels instead of 100 wasn’t just a coincidence, wasn’t it?)
Oh well, I’m sure a lot of people will create an automated Anki app for hardcore people who wants to do speed learning.
Just gonna throw out there that I personally really appreciate not seeing the level’s kanji displayed in front of me all the time. It did feel like I was “pre-reviewing” them even without hovering or clicking, especially since I knew those were the kanji for this level, so it’s very different from coming across a kanji that I’m learning out in the wild.
At the same time, I did occasionally get curious about when something was going to come back in reviews, so I’d hover to check and see what I could expect coming up. So, I think the additions to the forecast widget will be great for me! The new dashboard as a whole has been very motivating (I like seeing numbers go up), and I think that’d be an extra motivator for me.
One thing I’d personally like in the forecast, although it might be a niche want, is to have the option for relative time labels instead of absolute. Because my brain just doesn’t… really deal with absolute time well it says I have reviews coming up on Tuesday and I’m like “Oh god when is Tuesday!?!?”… Tuesday is today, lol. I would love love love an option to make the labels be “today”, “tomorrow”, “in 2 days”, etc. That would make it make a lot more sense to my brain which does not grasp time well.
Anyway, looking forward to what else is coming up! I saw that there’s an option now to display the forecast data for the current day, so I need to go reshuffle my dashboard to fit that in
Edit: Now that I have these two side by side, I kind of wish they listed different information at the top! Or that the weekly forecast got rid of the next 24 hours display in favor of showing a whole week of information?
I have failed at wanikani and burning out because I was going too slow by missing timings and all of that (No, I do not think Wanikani is too slow lol (since you can actually go fast), my way of doing it was too slow for my brain).
So for me it’s much more enjoyable to study following timings and whatnot.
I hear what you said, I dont think I agree that removing this very useful “time dimension” tool was good to fight cheaters (who can still look up everything before reviews), but I have made my peace with it. I do not have much more to add to advocate about it coming back anyway. I usually like Tofugu/WK philosophy on learning (learning the simplest symbols first, for one), and the fact that you have one at all, but that’s a part where we will just have to disagree I guess
I have installed a script which replaces it and I already feel much more “at ease” to be able to not screw up my timings and to check regularly when a kanji will show up (without showing me its meaning or reading), so now I can move on from the issue .
I think maybe something you can get out of our daily complaining, is how much disruptive to someone’s learning experience, especially people who have issues with memory / sense of time, it had been. I was really struggling for a few days, it’s a bit sad.
Like @drackyslime, I am ready to try out this new tool as well, and if it suits me or makes the absence of hover work-able, I will be glad and will positively post about it (it seems only fair).
Yup, testing the “apprentice first” for a few days, I have noticed that I am much more enclined to not do all my reviews all day as before LMAO. Lazy durtles like me need to be kept in check by the RANDOM sorting I believe.
But it’s a pretty cool feature, very useful
I actually saw some of your drawings before but this surprised me so much, it’s fantastic. One of my fav thing someone made on internet for sure lol. Can I use it in my study log? It fits so much the wanikani style too aha.
I will try to find a printer to get it
That’s so kind of you, thank you so much, made me smile a lot!
and that’s why AI got nothing on the indomitable human spirit and meme creativity!!!
Haha I appreciate it. Was a nice change of pace for the day and I’m glad you enjoy. Feel free to use it whereever you’d like- its all yours. If I have more funny ideas maybe I’ll make more and really sit down with it longer too
I got to draw something goofy and procrastinate from school for a bit, I should be commissioning you for that opportunity. Plenty happy here so long as you find it funny
Yup, let users decide, stop policing how users learn, bring back what we ask, not bend around the problem with dozens of new replacement features. I like some of the new features, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t add back the hover function.
You made learning into a game, even including the thinking about using the site in certain ways as “cheating”. You probably shouldn’t be surprised when people treat it as a game, and try to level quickly.
IMO as long as you are learning, “cheating” doesn’t exist. It’s a learning platform, not a competition. (But you should absolutely not be looking up words during lessons if you don’t remember.)
I use hover to do extra study on wkstats, and I prioritize learning kanji to level up, but I don’t let lessons or reviews build up too much. I also let the levelling slip a bit if it’s too much.
