Week 2: コーヒーが冷めないうちに (Intermediate BC)

I guess we agree that ワンピース is a dress. For the バイオ part, my dictionary gives me “bio” which could mean “organic”? As in hippie, or alternative style? But now that I think about it, could also be one of these ingenious Japanese abbreviations, e.g. for violet?

It does get image results on Google, and the images are all of… a style of some description, but I can’t quite put my finger on exactly what that is.

The book translator calls it a shirt-dress (though we’ve seen that we can’t trust the translation blindly), and the google image search brings up shirt-dress-like results, that’s all I know.

After spending way too much time on this, I think it has to do with “Bio Wash.”"

Most of the dresses that came up from the image search appear to be cotton, or cotton mix, and a lot of the descriptions talk about the feel. I’m 50% sure of it .

Interesting, and it may well be the answer, but why on earth would the author feel the need to point that out when describing the character? This takes description detail to another level entirely.

To those who stay onboard, Week 3 topic is here: Week 3: コーヒーが冷めないうちに (Intermediate BC)

Please note that the end of Wk 3 portion was moved a few sentences further to match the end of the passage, the new end phrase is 途方にくれていた。It is still the same page in the paperback version though.

I didn’t see any mention of it, so double-checking just in case: We shifted the Read Aloud by an hour and it starts in 10 minutes, right?
@Kyasurin @Belthazar @Wildjinjer and the others

Well, that’s when I was planning on showing up. :slightly_smiling_face:

I don’t know how to phrase in English this one

計は言うほど残念ではないだろう

the grammar point should be ほど/はない but I can’t really understand the meaning in this case

I think it means “Kei didn’t seem (のだろう) to be as disappointed (残念ではない) as she said (言うほど)”.

Oh! Thanks a lot, I will learn this point eventually…

I’ve had a manic week so I’ve fallen slightly behind (sorry Read Aloud gang, I should hopefully be there next week!)

If anything, my katakana game is getting stronger from reading this book as well as my ability to talk about various dresses and leggings. Definitely need to re-read some of this passage as I got pretty confused when the 奥 got introduced. Is there some animosity there between her and Hirai?

Not sure what you’re referring to here  Could you post a sentence or two please?

Ah whoops - I meant after the big sister gets introduced (was reading the 奥の部屋 bits wrong and thought there was some extra person running around!) I got slightly confused with the plot around that point.

I think what we’re seeing is the background stories of the people slowly unfold. So far we only got some vague hints here and there - everybody knows everybody else but we are just spectators from the outside who try to claw their way into understanding what’s going on…

Yah, it’s not 奥さん, it’s just the physical location 奥. :slightly_smiling_face:

Yeah I’m definitely hitting above my reading level but glad everyone is just as clueless as me at the moment! Hoping to have more time to get to grips with the grammar this week.

That’s what I get for speed reading in Japanese
