We are not all American

^^^ Lol… I think British was probably the lowest on that list

Probably because of the extreme low effort it takes to understand that ‘Color’ and ‘Colour’ are the same word.

Incidentally, my language partner is telling me (right now) that Indian, Burnese, and Chinese are the most common foreigners that he’s teaching.

edit: But he says Vietnamese and Chinese seem to be the most common in general.

I’m not sure why you think it’s such an huge effort ?

  1. British spelling
I really don’t care for this one, but why not, for wanikani devs it’s super easy to do, run a script on all the mnemonics keyword, fetch the British spelling and add it to synonymous. Low on priority but also low effort.

  2. Very specific US culture reference
So for, I’m about halfway into wanikani and I saw maybe about 10 mnemonics where I had no Idea what it was because it references a local brand or some minor us celebrity… Hardly the end of the world to change them as a part of the mnemonics overhaul to be a bit more friendly to international user.

Maybe you still didn’t catch that, but british spellings are already included for everything but radicals.

You are correct, did not catch that. So: easy…unless there is a reason that none of us have considered so far, which is entirely possible (any seasoned dev knows this is often true).

I am mainly talking about the mnemonics system, which is a very intricate interlocking system that works over the entirety of the course.

And @Arzar33: if it’s that easy then how much of it have you got done so far today? WaniKani has been working on revamping the mnemonics for over a year now, so there’s one reason i think it may be difficult. @viet is a better dev than I am and @koichi the genius who developed the current system. Neither of those guys are people who have the attitude of “screw the customers, I’ll do what i want to” so if it were as easy as you say it would have been done months ago. With your concrete, complete and working contributions it will be finished much sooner. Get to it.

Improvements to mnemonics (part of that is getting rid of a lot of the pop culture references, sorry Charlie Sheen fans) are in process, but it does take a long time. Anyways, it’s coming.

I think there are British spellings for everything though, except radicals (because the way the system was built, radicals can only take one meaning - probably something we’re doing will fix this so we can add British spellings for radicals too, but there’s a lot of underlying dev and content work that has to be done still to push that update – actually, it’s connected with the mnemonics updates, come to think of it). If there’s not a British spelling, you can always email in and we’ll add it as a synonym, probably.

P.S. Hey, you guys be nice :angrykoichi:

@koichi-ちゃん speaks to me and I instantly melt, apologize to everyone, and stop flirting with @Leebo.
You should totally hire me @koichi! It might not improve the company whatsoever, but if I ever again flirted with you you’d be able to fire me for sexual harassment! See? Win-Win!

That’s great news, thanks

Looking forward to it :relaxed:

Then I’d have to raise subscription rates to pay for all the suing.

Will you hire me instead? I’ll be your stand-in so you can spend more time showing extreme favouritism to @Vanilla!

How could I hire you when all our extra money just gets funneled to my favorite WK member?

I can tell you’ve never read a Stephen King novel - every single kid in his books wears Keds and rides Schwinn bikes! (That’s the only reason I knew what Keds were).

I guess you have a point. Probably shouldn’t tell @Vanilla that you buy things for @TamanegiNoKame, though.

Aha! Indeed, I have not read any of his novels.

Is the KKK not an organization from the US? I mean no offense, but it seems strange to me for foreigners to know more about minor political factions than an internationally aired show that is still culturally relevant.

At the very least, the only European political parties I can name are a few from Germany and the Chancellor (as I have relatives in Germany). I only became familiar with Japan’s political parties after coming to Japan.

Agreed. I have no idea at all what Jeopardy is, or the other references in this thread, or loads of references in the mnemonics (I’m a Brit, in my 50’s, been abroad for decades, haven’t watched TV for longer - there’s very few modern cultural references that I’m going to get!) but it would be quite silly of me to expect WK to change for my particular cultural world-view! WK is what it is, built by and mainly for a particular kind of people. The world does not revolve around me and nor do I expect it to.
