I’ve been using the Flaming Durtles app for quite a while and I’ve found it so useful, I was wandering if there’s a difference between F.D. and regular WaniKani. Is WaniKani just the website? Kinda confused here xx
Flaming Durtles is just a 3rd party app to access wanikani and adds some missing features that the wanikani website doesn’t have.
Just so you know, Flaming Durtles is no longer supported and has been forked by our very own @Joeni
(I’m still using flaming durtles too, and nothing has broken yet, but something will eventually and it’ll stop working)
Thanks for your reply! I have noticed some differences between the website and F.D., such as number of reviews / lessons I’ve to complete, but there still seems to be a link between the 2, very interesting! Do you know of there’s another, more ‘official’ app or is WaniKani it for now? Thanks again x
There’s no official apps, just the website.
There shouldn’t be a difference between the website and the app, however. I’d look at moving over to Smouldering Durtles and see if that fixes it.
I’m a bit surprised you see different number of lessons and reviews at level 3 but I definitely do at level 36.
The reason is that the Wanikani team has moved around some items, a kanji was level 9 but is now level 47.
If I go to the Wanikani website, this kanji will be in my list of reviews because it is implemented to show me all active items.
But the Flaming Durtle app is implemented to get all items from Wanikani that are until my level 36, so it misses that kanji.
They use the same data but have different ways to show it.
The app allows you more freedom, you can decide if your items in the review queue will be ordered by type, by level, or others.
You can’t do that on the website, unless you install User Scripts.
So it boils down to if you prefer to do your reviews on mobile (use the app) or on a PC (use the website + user scripts)
Theoretically. Since the app is built on top of the WaniKani REST API and has its own logic, there is always room for some differences. For instance, I don’t know if it’s easy to track all of the backend API endpoint queries the WK frontend makes or one has to make some assumptions and/or reverse engineer them.
It breaks when you have learned things that have changed in their levels. I have a few things that got raised up into the 40s and one level 60, when they crop up, Flaming Durtles doesn’t acknowledge them.
You might just need to sync on flaming durtles, sometimes my phone hasn’t been connected to the internet for a little bit so it’s out of sync. Otherwise the amount of time it takes to complete an item should be the same
That`s one of the settings I definitely recommend, the automatic update when you open if it’s been closed more than three minutes or whatever it was.
The difference might be in how flaiming durtles deals with kana only vocabulary. If I remember right, flaiming durtles treats them like radicals. That is one of the issues flaming durtles fixed.
