Wanikani memes

The 忙しない hurt my eyes a little  . Added to my Anki deck, though.

You’re doing fine! Those are low numbers still. You can do this! :muscle:

Well, yeah I know. It just looked weird having only like 1-10 reviews, but every hour. And a tiny bit annoying

I actually plan out my reviews like this. I’m trying not to burn out by having huge set times with 30+ reviews. (or at least only first thing in the morning and before bed.)

Otherwise when I’m doing lessons I fill out all the hours with no more than 10 reviews. If there are already 10 reviews +, I don’t do a lesson. I prefer it this way, as when I have a moment I can knock out all of the reviews quick instead trudging through a bunch. (plus my attention really wains after about 20 reviews)

When I started I was doing 20 reviews per hours, but that was to much to be productive and I ended up burning out. (had to reset 1/3 of my levels)

Why are people so annoyed by vocab items? Isn’t it the whole point of studying kanji to be able to read words?

I love being able to read new words, but there is something cool recognizing new Kanji. The way Wanikani is designed it makes reaching a new level feel special. Although I think sometimes we get caught up in learning Kanji as fast as we can though. Also learning a new Kanji especially at an early level like where I’m at means there is a huge chance I will see it in the wild. For example, I’m learning some new Kanji here on level 6 that I’m seeing everywhere.

The vocab wave is always intimidating. High volume, plenty of exceptions, nuance to be considered, similarity to older vocab… It can be daunting.

Part of the issue may also be that vocab doesn’t contribute towards levelling up. More work without the gamification buzz.

plus WK often includes vocabs that are rather unusual, I often ask my coworkers if they actually use word xyz , and frequently get told that its a kinda old word, or just one that isnt used much in “normal” japanese. Which to me adds a level of frustration, though I understand that vocab is there to help us practice the kanji readings

Aye, but I bet all of them know what it is and how it’s read.

It’s like the word “pedantic”. If someone was learning English and they learned this word I would think that’s great even though it’s probably not used very often and is kind of an old word.

Also, the vocab is to introduce you about the nuance and use of certain readings, not to know vocab. It’s there to strenghten the amount of readings you know, and to give you a certain intuition as to what readings are used where. Sometimes the words used are a bit archaic or not normally written with kanji, but the other combinations that use that readings might have kanji that is too advanced for what you’re learning right now. That’s why the words are a bit weird sometimes.

i like the vocab! if kanji are lego blocks, vocab is building stuff with lego blocks

also, vocab lessons are much easier than kanji lessons (at least for me)… second half of a level always feels like a bit of a breather ^^

@Pep95 yeah i know , i’m not saying the vocab we learn here is useless by any means  it’s just since it’s not mentioned anywhere that you don’t really use certain words (at all, or just not often) it can lead to people using those words in conversation and their counterpart being a little confused maybe or it could make you sound less skilled even? hope you guys understand what im saying, english obviously isnt my first language  I also dont wanna discourage anyone concerning their vocab studies here btw!

Ah yes that’s true. There are often many threads and discussions about vocab on the forums. Maybe there should be some introduction segment where they explain that purpose of vocab very clearly, and recommend some better vocab tools like Torii or Kitsun.

Nah, not to be pedantic, but I reckon “pedantic” sees a lot of use. On the other hand, the word “pandemic”, prior to last March? :slightly_smiling_face:
