Sweet, these are the mnemonics I was already using for 衤 and 帚. I also found it useful to learn the 隶 radical to replace brush + water in 隷 and 逮.
So far, have totally agreed with the kanji you’ve added since I was last here and generally where they’re added in the level system. A group of 5 learners at my work have picked up the app at my behest, so I’m back with a suggestion.
My suggestion is that you create a separate, supplemental learning section outside the level system for one-off kanji that may be common in other media. One of the big ones for me is tools / equipment in video games. Examples below:
兜, 斧, 杖, 鎧
Seen these in music quite a bit too, though music has all sorts of crazy stuff like swapping 回る with 廻る just to be artistic so… ![]()
Thank you for spreading the word about WaniKani! We really appreciate that ![]()
The idea of vocab/kanji packs has come up a few times, so you’re definitely not alone in wanting something like this. While we can’t promise anything here, feedback and suggestions like this are really helpful for understanding what you guys are looking for, and what options we may want to explore going forward — thank you for sharing! (Speaking purely as a private individual, and not as a representative for WK, I would very much share your enthusiasm for a video game equipment bonus vocab pack
)
Thanks for adding the Outfit radical! I’ve been struggling with that one vs Spirit.
This is really insightful.
Can you recommend a good resource or reference for the origin of radicals? As I feel these connections will be super helpful for me.
I’m really happy to see 衤 split into it’s own radical! That caused me so much confusion when I was first learning to write kanji.
I’ve been using this list, which shows some of the relations between radicals and their alternate forms.

Thanks, that’s a great resource!
Also, I don’t know if it was intentional, and I didn’t notice it myself until ChatGPT mentioned it, but the fact that the “Outfit” radical 衤 is based on the kanji for “clothing” 衣 is another brilliant connection, and a genius choice of radical name. WaniKani should shout more about this!
The write ups here I found to be super helpful, especially for situations like 肉 => 月
@TofuguAdam not sure if this is the right place for this, but I just got dinged for answering "本社” as “company hq” and it seems that’s the only major alternative that’s not accepted (HQ and “company headquarters” are both valid alts)
I think you can add personal synonyms, but maybe you’re just letting them know so they can fix it for everyone , and if that’s the case then that’s fine too![]()
@TofuguAdam The Kanji 裕 still uses the spirit radical instead of the new outfit radical. I think this is probably an oversight. Could you look into it?
Thank you very much for the heads-up!
We are on it ![]()
Hey! Just wanted to let you know that this has been fixed and “Company HQ” will now be accepted as a correct answer for 本社
Thank you for the heads-up! In the future, just using the Contact form on the main site is probably the most sure-fire way to let us know about stuff like this and make sure your feedback doesn’t get overlooked (there’s a small risk of that in a thread like this
).
Could you add “Report issue with X” to the pages of each item? That would be the most convenient way ![]()
Please consider adding the word - 分岐. 岐阜 is feeling awfully lonely ![]()
