Hi everyone! I’m currently level 7, expected to level up here in a few hours.
I wanted to ask a rather odd question. Usually I see people have the issue of staying motivated and continuing on.
My issue is that I feel too attached. I wait and check the clock too often for the next hour to come to do my set of reviews. So much so that I am doing my reviews on time, at the minute.
While it’s helping me progress and keeping me busy, I’m worried it’s sidetracking me from learning other parts of Japanese that are just as important, grammar, speaking, and writing.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get around this? Any other resources that can help me with grammar for example that are similar to WaniKani in that it gamifies learning?
There’s nothing to fix here, doing a lot of WaniKani at level 7 is perfectly fine even if it puts other elements on the back burner. You won’t regret learning those kanji. Cherish this motivation.
What I would recommend is trying to read simple Japanese from time to time, and see how you feel about it. Eventually (probably around WaniKani levels 20~30) you should find that the kanji are no longer the main issue for reading Japanese, instead you’ll keep stumbling upon unknown vocab and grammar. That should motivate you to work on that instead. At least it did for me.
I agree, with simias, that you’re in a good spot. Ride that wave of motivation as long as you can! It’s a good thing. If you do want to mix in grammar, and it sounds like you do, I enjoyed Genki with the workbook. The workbook is what gave me the most to chew on.
Congrats on finding your motivation. Mine started the same way and still lasts. Being motivated is great, but please make sure it doesn’t cause you trouble outside of WK. Getting distracted every hour can be a serious issue if you need to do something done that takes few hours.
Also, you don’t have many reviews now, but make sure not to too many lessons at once just because you feel like it today. Because over time, they will accumulate and when you need to slow down, the pace will slow down after few weeks, not immediately. Do only fixed amount of lessons, even if it seems too little.
Bunpro is great resource for grammar, but again, don’t try to do too much too soon. You can leave grammar for few more levels, and start around level 10-15. Than start reading some easy texts around level 20-25. Knowing more kanji and vocabulary helps tremendously.
Having such motivation at level 7 is fine. Be wary of going too fast and getting much more reviews than you can handle. For grammar I would second bunpro as well.
Best of luck my friend.
Like everyone else has said, ride the high, BUT NEVER GIVE UP! Once the motivation dies out just do what you can (even if it’s only reviews). It’s a marathon, no a sprint, but when you have the energy to burn, burn about 80% of it, and carry the remaining 20% to the next day for maximum impact.
