Vacation Mode is Not Your Friend

Well, you either now agree that vacation mode is not a problem, or you missed my point.
I’m going to assume the former, because I’m nice like that

Are you making that into a script right now?
If so, it should do the reset even if you use the ignore script.

Vacation Mood is not your Friend. I activated Vacation Mood and now I can’t stop thinking about holidays.

I activated Vacation Mood, and now I can’t focus on work  I can’t even leave the forum anymore.

lol how can the SRS system do its job, jog memory at most EFFECTIVE time, if you interfere

It will do its job regardless.
If you miss, intervals decrease. If you succeed, they increase.
The point is to learn, not to learn in a minimal amount of repetitions.

no, the point for the SRS is for you to get from Apprentice to burn. Not have it revolve around Guru and Masters

:woman_shrugging: Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

I would, but I don’t want to risk accidentally resetting

That’s what I thought. I went to Korea recently and enabled vacation mode because I was… on vacation.

But they apparently added it after much demand from users. The people who are paying them for the service.

I don’t get why people are disheartened or lose their motivation if they see a high number on the rewiews. It’s just a number, and it still what you are supposed to be reviewing, if you put vacation mode and the number stays unnaturally low you’re just fooling yourself, it’s the same of going on a body scale with one foot only, in the end you’ll end up doing the same number of reviews anyway, because you likely forgot most of those items. But if it makes you feel better to have a 0 there, you should definitely put vacation mode on: happiness and wellbeing are far more important than wanikani.

Learning a language is a full time commitment. Even if you are on holiday, you should make time for wanikani reviews. Unless you have no internet connection I don’t see how not doing wanikani reviews is justifiable, it’s an incredibly streamlined process that takes little effort compared to other study methods.

Do you know those moments when you have so many tasks to do that you end up not doing anything at all? Same thing. Our brain seeks rewards. If what we have to do is too much, the reward is too far from reach. Sure, you could divide the tasks/reviews into smaller batches, but the reward might not be big enough compared to the original one.

It’s very hard for me to relate. But I suppose since modernity people have found this logic more appealing.

The fact is, nothing get’s accomplished if you just let it sit. …except financial investments lol

Doing nothing on the basis of “there is too much to do” just means… https://ih1.redbubble.net/image.158316898.2338/flat,800x800,070,f.jpg (you played yourself)

Are we still discussing SRS as if it was a god-given way to teach the brain, instead of some random time intervals Tofugu chose at some point?

If there was some study that shows taking breaks boosts your performance by 3% everyone would complain that vacations are not taken seriously.

I’m just preaching consistency, man. Which is how one gets results.

And I’m not against breaks. I just had one, in mater of fact, by letting my lessons sit while I just did reviews. I am not here arguing the effectiveness of a break. I am, however, against the use of Vacation Mood.

And regardless of what a study proves or not, the fact is nothing gets done if you don’t do it. There is a 100% decline in perforance if you don’t do anything.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your opinion @adking29. In fact, when I take a vacation soon, I plan to stop doing new lessons a few days before I leave, and just do reviews during. I want to cut way down on my WK during my vacation, just not to zero. The reason? Because I still need to review the items I’ve already learned. I do think you shouldn’t assume things about other people’s motives though. Like saying vacation mode is only there as a profit making device by the developers.

This whole thing is subjective. It’s also important to take a step back sometimes so that you can then move two forward. Being some time away from something allows us to rethink about our perspective.

I’m 341 days into WK. Would taking 1 month break be bad?

I’m not saying that using Vacation Mode can’t be a bad thing. But recognizing that it can be both a good or a bad thing is the way to go in my opinion.

While I think this is a fun conversation, ultimately I think it comes down to how each individual learns. If someone benefits from using Vacation Mood, then that’s fine. If someone else prefers to do reviews while being on vacation, or they want to let reviews build up, that’s fine too. Obviously, if someone abuses the function, then they’re not getting their money’s worth or aiding their Japanese, but that’s their own burden to bear.

I’ve done it both ways, and I found the times after I turned vacation mode on I came back to WaniKani feeling refreshed and energetic about Japanese. The times where I reviewed on vacation, or let reviews pile up, was personally very discouraging and exhausting. (I’m also a less hardcore person in general. I usually take 12-20 days for each level.)

At the end of the day, WaniKani is just one tool suggesting how often you should review. You don’t need to live and die by their time intervals. (sorry crabigator)
