Then do you think you success to do enough reading per week considering all the time you already spend on learning kanjis per week ?
Well I don’t spend enough time on reading but I got full points in the reading part of my last japanese test. It seems my reading skills are good enough for now.
Unlike many people who only want to be able to read japanese I also want to speak and be able to write in japanese. I would like to spend more time reading but if I just spend all my time reading manga I feel like I’m not really learning japanese. But more like pretending to learn japanese. ![]()
I need to practice speaking and writing more because these are my weak points right now.
Thanks!
Thanks as well, @Natsuha!
@Shin
I started lv 5 saturday, got new kanji yesterday, tuesday evening 7pm, and now I get another batch of vocab it seems at 7pm Wednesday ? I don’t know if this should be the case? I’m just online 3x a day, 8am, at noon, and at 8pm; but now I have to do another review sesh at midnight T_T, something I don’t want, do you know how to “fix” it?
If it’s just vocabulary I would skip it and do it the next day. I sometimes do reviews during the night but only if they are current level radicals or kanji reviews and when I am awake at the right time. I never set any alarms.
Thought so, yeah, it’s also only 34 new vocabs, and I can easily finish them and get my first 7 day level, which was surprisingly easy, to be honest, even though I had to get up early for the first time in 5 years XD
Sorry to chime in so late!
I read this thread and read amagi’s guide as well for seven day level ups. I’m really impressed at the efficiency you guys can pull off.
But I’m joining this convo asking for a bit of guidance? I would like to do about 10 day level ups or so. Going a day faster or slower is fine. That’s just an estimation. I was initially interested in 7 days, but I have a feeling I’ll burn out and eventually have to slow down anyway for the higher levels.
I’d like to do my first set of lessons at 8am, then 12pm reviews and 8pm reviews. (This is what I’ve been doing) Just keeping that schedule seems easy enough, but the thing is I’m confused on how to split up my lessons. Up until today I’ve been doing 15-20 lessons a day. Split between At 8am, and 4pm. I’m just a little lost on what days should be dedicated to radicals, kanji, and vocab.
I’m also interested in using the reorder script as well. I’m level 5 now and already spent 2 days finishing vocab from level 4. It felt like a bit of a waste of time. With reorder, I’m assuming I’ll do radicals and kanji first so I can get the srs going. After that I’ll do vocab from the previous and current level the following days, I’m assuming?
Thank you so much and I hope you’re willing to give some pointers
I’m pretty disorganized and lost right now so it would be a huge help!
Hey aweizondo, don’t worry about it. You’ll get in control! This is what happens, I’ll do a scenario:
Saturday 8am; LEVELUPTIME yay! : you do ALL radicals (~15) and ALL new kanji(~20), and NO vocab (~50) yet. (you can do this by using the REORDER script, it lets you do radicals and kanji BEFORE doing vocab), this is 40 of em, so quite a lot!!! but doable for some.
So, sat.8am newkanji/newradical, sat 12pm newkanji/newradical review, sat 8pm newradical/newkanji review AND vocab lessons from the days before prolly;
Sunday 8am 15/50 vocab, sun 12pm 15/50vocabreview, sun8pm 15/50vocabreview AND all (lv5) newradical/newkanji review.
Monday 8am. the next 15/50 vocab2 ( ill call it vocab2), mon 12pm 30/50 vocab2review; mon 8pm 15/50vocab2review AND 15/50vocabreview1.
Tuesday 8am 15/50 vocab3, tues 12pm 15/50 vocab3review, tues 8pm 15/50 vocab3review AND 15/50 vocab2 review AAAAAND GURU all radicals/kanji (lv 5); AFTER THIS; Tuesday 8pm: learn all new kanji unlocked by guru’ing the radicals!!**!!! tues 12pm: newlyunlocked(lv5)kanji review.
Wednesday 8am. You’ve unlocked more vocab due to the guru’ing of the kanji - - - next 15/90 (90 in total when unlocked) vocab4 AAAAND allnewlyunlocked(lv5)kanji review, wed 12pm. 15/90 vocab4review, wed 8pm 15/90vocabreview4 AND 15/90vocab3review AND GURU 15/50vocabreview1.
Thursday 8am 15/90 vocab5 AND newlyunlocked(lv5)kanji review, Thurs 12pm 15/90 vocab5review, Thurs 8pm 15/90 vocab5review AND 15/90 vocab4review AND GURU 15/50vocabreview2.
Friday 8am. 15/90 vocab6, Friday 12pm 15/90 vocab6review, Friday 8pm
15/90 vocab6review AND 15/90 vocab5review AND GURU 15/50vocabreview3.
Saturday 8am. FIRST DO UR REVIEWS!!! - namely the newlyunlocked(lv5)kanji – LEVEL UP TO LEVEL 6;
----- literally do that all over again.
u got this
Thank you so so much!!
This was so incredibly helpful and exactly what I needed! I really do commend you for taking the time to type out an entire scenario ![]()
I have a few quick questions, though
I’m sure you meant 12 AM here?
And for my second question, is this is adjustable? If id like to slow down or speed up I just increase or decrease my amount of daily lessons, correct? Sorry, I’m still new to this whole thing. But I think this really gave me an “Aha!” Moment.
Thank you so much again for all your help, Leon!
I meant 12am there yes,
The schedule is adjustable, yes, as long as you log in 3x a day, you can slow things down. For example, do only the radicals Saturday, then spread the kanji out, you KNOW however, when you do the lesson of the last available kanji at that time, If you follow the schedule, its going to be up for GURU exactly 84 hours later, meaning you will GURU anything you learn at 8am on a day, 3,5 days later so kanji or vocab learnt at 8am Saturday, is gonna be up for guru Tuesday 8pm.
By knowing this, you can now spread your kanji and radicals learning, as this governs either you leveling up or you unlocking more vocab. So if you take it easier learning kanji by learning 10 at a time, or less, that’s perfectly fine. So let’s say you want to level up in 10 days. And let’s say its 50 kanji in total to level up, but you have 30 on the level up. It all starts with knowing when u have to do what. If u have 10 days, that means u have to guru your radicals on the 6th day at the latest, as it’ll open up the other kanji of the level. Here’s the fun part, you know at the 6th day, at 8pm you have to learn your last couple of kanji, as that enables you to level up 3,5 days later, it being the 10th day. So, now you know that, so let’s say you do 10/20 radicals the first day, 10/20 radicals the next, then they unlock the remaining kanji at the 5th day 8pm, cuz you know if done at 2nd day at 8am, u gonna guru at 8pm 5th day, and unlock soms juicy kanji. See a pattern here?
This also means that you can spread out learning the new kanji over these days. Up until the 6th day, you can take it slow, learn like 7 at a time and maybe soms vocab on the side. Then, at the 6th day unlock, you either unlock em all, so you can level up on day 10, but if you did my scenario of the radicals learning in 2 days, unlocking kanji at 5th day 8pm, you can actually take these slower as well!!! Because u can do like 10 at the 8pm unlock, and then 10 new ones on day 6, and then its just reviewing for the win! See ?
Omg!! Okay I really get it now! It took some time to wrap my head around wanikani’s system, but now I just adjust to where I need it to be. ty again for the detailed explanation!!
No problem at all, thanks for asking
good luck on the journey, id recommend using this site: Kanji.sh | Download Kanji worksheets for all Wanikani levels along your study, using it, you can print the levels you’re on and also practice the writing, and ny doing so u still practice onyomi, kunyomi and meaning, if you recite these meankngs when you write the kanji
ohhh… genius thank you!
I havent thought of reciting outloud as I write… This will do wonders for remembering!
I feel like a tortoise looking at everyone here…I’ve been averaging 15-20 days per level ![]()
Then again, I do have a full-time job and have begun learning grammar simultaneously. I dunno if that’s an excuse or not, but I don’t want to burn (no pun intended) out. I’ve always been someone that needs to take learning slower and be sure I understand everything before moving on. I’m on no deadline, really, so I think it’s okay to go at my own pace. I do feel somewhat bad, though.
Don’t worry about that man, I’ve burnt out big time after my semester ended and I’ve gone from zero to JLPT 4 in four months including grammar, listening etc. even with other subjects on Japanese history, economy and sociology etc. I’ve put myself on Wanikani breaktimes haha only doing reviews for two weeks, so today was the first day of doing 20 fresh kanji, and I feel good about it, my brain seems to work 10x better than before due to the rest I took, so don’t think the fastest way is the best, as it’s just not for everyone and it’s certainly asking it’s toll.
Thanks, man! I appreciate the feedback. I’m trying to pick up the pace a little bit, but you’re right; quality over speed. I’d rather have a good understanding and take longer than get a good pace with poor recollection.
You might also wanna do some writing of kanji and vocab in between or at night as well. It’s quite soothing and makes you feel good about yourself, as well as improving your writing and reading simultaneously, ofcourse. 頑張ろう!(がんばろう)!
