This doesn’t give a full understanding of Japanese grammar, which is something that is best learned through application, but it provides a strong picture through its simplified representation. There are lots of good textbooks. I will list some, free or otherwise. Online textbooks Tae Kim’s Guide to Learning Japanese sci.lang.japan Imabi Renshuu Paid online textbooks TextFugu by Tofugu! 80/20Japanese available in physical, audio and online form.
