The N3 Thread

I will have to spend some time with that video - only watched 5 or 6 minutes so far, but it appears to be a great example of what it’s like to study Japanese in Japanese - with no English commentary or explanation.

I understood plenty, even though a few of the kanji and words were new to me.

It does require intense concentration though - and no doubt once I have gone through the whole thing I’ll want to replay it again - and again - and perhaps again - to see what sinks in.

It’s been a long time since I’ve taken a Japanese class with any sort of English explanation and my instructors have been very similar to this video in terms of speaking speed and content difficulty. If you’re still thinking of language schools, listening to videos like these (even if you don’t use them for any serious study) can probably help you mentally prepare quite a bit for class!

I’m certainly not the type of person who can sit down with one of these compilations and ingest it at all once - I like to give it ten minutes on one day, fifteen on another, maybe three minutes a different day, just when I have a moment. It keeps me from encountering repeated terms and explanations, which I always end up dealing with when I video-hop for grammar

Just discovered this one but it’s pretty interesting with different levels marked (although the levels are a bit arbitrary sometimes IMO).

I am actually using this now to prepare and quite like it! Been through kanji and vocabulary, now on to grammar & reading. I also like that it provides online audio for the listening part (I wouldn’t have a cd player anymore to play cds lol).

How’s everyone’s study going? I’ve been focusing hard on grammar these last few weeks, but I feel like I just end up messing it all in my head sometimes. I’m using a combination of bunpro, tobira and somatome, while reviewing the dictionary of basic grammar as well. I haven’t done much test directed prep otherwise - I do listen to podcasts often and read books/manga daily, but sometimes I worry a bit that I should be studying in a slightly more exam-focused way. I’m also starting a new job in about 3 weeks, so I’ve been really trying to get ahead of my studies until then since I don’t know how much time daily time I’ll have to study once I start it.

actually planning to go through a mock exam tomorrow, and reviewing every mistake i make. Hope for a noticeable increase over the 88/180 points i got last mock exam :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, I didn’t do the mock exam when i planned, but i did it today. Mock exam 3 of Todai News full size tests, and I… Passed!

Was actually really disappointed when I clicked “submit” and saw that I hadn’t passed. Apparently I was worse at the listening section than last time? How’s that possible? So, I went to the listening section, and checked my answers. There, I saw this:

Ah, yep, that’s my bad.

LMAO. It had counted this question wrong, even though I ticked the exact answer it’s saying is right. No idea how that went wrong, but it went wrong 5 other times in the listening section. So, with 30 questions in the listening section, and 60 attainable points, I just added 10 points to the listening score to set my real score straight. (The other sections were completely fine, and I made sure to check that it didn’t count wrong answers from me as right, that’d be unfair)

So, My final score being:

Vocab & Grammar: 30/60 (sectional pass, +3 from July)
Reading: 21/60 (sectional pass, same as July (I gotta work on this))
Listening: 46/60 (sectional pass, +6 from July)

Total: 97/180 (Overall pass, +9 from July)

As a reminder, 19 or more is a sectional pass, 95 or more is an overall pass

So yeah, I passed by the skin of my teeth - but I passed! And there’s two more months to go! Will be sifting through this mock exam and clearing out all questions until i understand it all.

As for my Wanikani studies…

I’ve got some lessons to do. I want to get to level 20 at least, might take a breather then & catch up on vocab lessons. Postponing them for too long.

I highly recommend doing a mock exam right now! Hugely valuable, shows you your exact weak points. がんばれ!

Ugh, I just did a mock exam for grammar and I’m really not that happy. Well, the good news is that I improved compared to the previous one - I got 26/39 instead of 22/39 this time. I also did quite good on the reading parts, so 問題 4 to 7 - I think I just got one wrong, and a few texts felt easier when compared to last time (a few challenging texts as usual though). But the first 3 parts… I’m always bad at sentence ordering, but I also did worse then I expected in the first part and the one where you need to choose the correct term to fill the gap. Even though I’ve been practicing a lot of reading, I still feel like I have no idea of what’s going on in some of the sentences. I think I just need to continue regularly studying grammar and doing test exercises/mock exams, but it just feels a bit discouraging after all the grammar studies I’ve been doing so far.

This video reminded me that I need to be timing my reading practice :smiling_face_with_tear:

We’ll be getting our invitations to the exam this month, right? Exciting :eyes:

I’ve been slacking off more than I wanted to. 400 reviews built up because of it. Agonyyy

This is merely a temporary setback! Let’s slash these durtles :stuck_out_tongue:

Is your voucher being physically mailed? I got mine emailed at the start of October, I didn’t realize it could arrive so late

Mine will be physically mailed and hasn’t arrived yet. I did get the money from the registration take from my bank account, though
