That's a Japanese Word?

The first time I heard the word “skosh” was in some TV show or movie where a Jewish person orders “a bagel with just a skosh of lox.” Before I learned 少し, I assumed “skosh” was Yiddish like the other words from that show I had to look up later (kvetch, kushinyerkeh, etc)

I knew this word originated in Asia, but I had no idea that “rickshaw” came from the Japanese word 人力車 (jinrikisha - manpowered car) or that rickshaws were invented in Japan. I don’t really associate rickshaws with Japan in particular, probably because they were heavily exported to other Asian countries after their invention in the late 19th century.

I honestly thought they were much older than that and probably came from China.

I never realised that 布団 (ふとん) was a Japanese word. I never bothered to check by I suspected it was Swedish because of Ikea

I thought “emoji” was “emo” エモ - short for emotion - + ji 字. Was surprised to find out that the “emo” part was actually 絵文.

I think I heard that word a few time but it was pronounced “skootch”
