Thank you for this.

I’m usually in the ~88% success camp lately, I used to be near 92%

This definitely give me insight on how to move forward.

Gracias por el consejo!

With the whole COVID-19 thing and the current state of emergency I’m not even sure that would be an option but hopefully I could check it out soon.

RecomendarĂas Correos de Costa Rica encima de algo como Aerocasillas? (Si es que siguen mandando aviones)

Pura vida!

I know my comment is conflicting, lol. I mean that I would rather go too fast and struggle, than go too slow and steady, that is my personal priority. It’s that mindset that’s helped me plow through wanikani at the speed I have. I had two month+ long breaks that started by thinking “oh my reviews piled up, I’ll just work through these and try to get my apprentice numbers down” and the days just flew by. Before I knew it, I went from my regular 7 day levels, to 50+ days on level 42.
So slowing down isn’t bad, but be careful about taking a break!

I think i would like going to fast too. I mean i tried study grammer(along side wk) and it didn’t work to me. Because i almost (always)neglect studying grammer. My original thought when i started was to finish wk first then going to other aspect. But i seen alot of people recommending doing multiple aspect at once. Whether it is grammer or reading books or speaking with natives.

The problem with only doing WaniKani is that you can’t reinforce anything you learn. Without reinforcing the kanji and words you’ve learned, you’re bound to forget them.

Yes, I do think that once I hit somewhere the 6 month and halfway point, my retention went down and I was forgetting content. WK is ultimately a tool to get you reading elsewhere, so ideally you need to be doing that at some point in the 20-30 level range.
But also, re-learning a forgotten word when you come across it in reading isn’t a huge effort. Just keep moving forward.

I don’t like studying grammar explicitly, so I could never get it to work. What saved me was that I just started listening a lot and learning grammar through that. Also reading. Bunpro did give me some extra nudge to be able to comprehend a bit more, but it became tedious juggling two SRS systems after a while (sometimes even 3-4).

I hope I don’t get butchered for this (were on a language learning site afterall), but it’s grammar.

Exactly.

@flowersandflames: Its not a speed constraint, after all, I have been managing 8 day-levels for over 8th months. Its a “I don’t have time to read or learn anything else, at that speed” issue that I’m trying to solve.

(By slowing down)

Haha nice i like that! Im definitely down to try out a book. Also by the way with wanikani and I think this might affect ur approach, if you look at posts from people who have achieved lv 60, you find out tehres acutally a lot of quick levels like for example i think levels 50-60 are quick levels that require no radicals and you can compelte in 3-4 days. So in actuality if you keep up this pace it won’t take you 8 more moths or so to finish, it’d be a good amt shorter i’d think

Update if any of you are interested.

I definitely switched the mindset, level 28 was around 13 days, and lvl 29 will be around 16-20. Current rules:

  • Only do reviews once per day, during my nights. This has taken out a tremendous amount of stress of my mornings and mid-days both during work and during the weekends. Average amount of nightly reviews: 100-130.

  • Do the lessons sizes that @seanblue recommended. But also, consider the amount of items under Apprentice. Im currently trying to leave them at 65-80 maximum.

IMPACT:

  • Less stress on my regular life
  • More time to actually study and read (Anki time during lunch, struggling with manga, etc.)

Thank you all for your support, a change for the better was made.

Hey Tim, I think I never replied to you. I ended up following your advice and spending almost a full week working/clearing the backlog vocabulary items.

This helped tremendously in the goal of always maintaining a similar amount per day.

Thank you!

That’s great! I’m glad you’ve found a good setup!
