I used to have 2 students in the same class: あいり and えり
both names were written 愛理
I had many other students that I was trying to puzzle out or look up their names, and I asked coworkers for help, and got the response “I don’t know how to read their name, go ask their homeroom teacher”
As for place names, this is a pretty common name, and was the name of a town near me, but I was really confused the first time I tried to read it: 大和
For some reason, やまと was the first thing to spring to my mind when I looked at that. Maybe something to do with the fact that やまと and 和 are both former names for Japan.
The topic came up in class again this morning. The town names were 西彼(せいひ) and 西彼(さいひ). Apparently my teacher’s wife is from the first one, and the other one is just across a body of water.
yeah, i gave up on names a long time ago. i’m asking people instead of guessing.
