Yes, especially if you’re at the beginner stages! If you kind of remember what’s supposed to be happening, you can use that to navigate around what you don’t know! (Bonus: Books that are based on or translated from English stories tend to be great sources of Katakana practice )
Of course the difficulty of the book matters too, but if you find something in the beginner - lower intermediate range on Natively, that should be ok to start with.
But do learn at least some N5 grammar first though. You’ll have a really hard time if you don’t know even the basics of particles and conjugation.
Thank you, big dawg. I don’t have a degree, which sometimes makes me wish I didn’t have a pulse. Seems like it’s harder just about everywhere if you don’t have one. It would be nice to be a white monkey, at least for the experience, maybe someday. Thanks for your reply. I’ll consider these things.
Consider yourself vouched for. Had a coworker turn me on to Sanderson a few years back and after reading Warbreaker (which he offers for free on his site) I read the Mistborn series and enjoyed it tremendously.
On the topic itself, it sounds like you goal is to be able to converse in Japanese, not to be a walking dictionary. I would agree with the suggestion that maxing WK before incorporating other forms of study is probably not optimal. I saw a recommendation in another thread related to Genki where someone suggested ToKini Andy on Youtube - I watched one of the episodes but since I’m not doing Genki and am using other resources I can’t give much more info than that, but here’s an example playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaQBL4XHuSo&list=PLA_RcUI8km1NMhiEebcbqdlcHv_2ngbO2
This is the part of the post where I’d insert a witty yet inspirational welding-themed piece of advice for motivation. Sadly, I feel like I’d fail miserably if I tried, so please pretend I did. Good luck!
Hey brother, I went and signed up for Bunpro at your suggestion. I’m seeing something here that claims I can link my WK and BP accounts together to hide furigana I already have burned. Do you know how I would go about that? I keep seeing something about an API, but I don’t know how to access that on either site. Do you know anything about this?
Thank you, brother. I feel a little silly, now, as I probably could’ve found this if I looked just a bit harder. I guess that’s what living in the instant gratification information age does to you, huh? Can’t figure out a problem immediately so assume you need help with it. The human experience is crazy.
