My Review of WaniKani after 2 Years

wanikani is very good at teaching kanji but yh- it should be supplemented with a vocab app. Imo the best one is torii srs with wanikani mode.
Iv learned n5-n4 words through torii first( wanikani will eventualy teach you them, but they are all spread out across 12-36 levels) and then set it to Wani Kani mode - an amazing experience that leads to very quick vocabulary acquisition.

The writing for the book actually isn’t as hard as you would expect, but yeah theres a large amount of vocab as you probably know. Best of luck when you give it a go!

Vocabulary app, why not if they want to do it. As long as WaniKani does not get cluttered with too basic Japanese everything is fine.

yeah i feel like there’s money to be made if they released like an official expansion pack, maybe they want to keep it like laser focused though

also typing this out i realized they might get complaints about people feeling it should be in wk, but maybe if they made one for all the non kanji words

The vocabulary like 現金 is something you will learn at some point anyway in my impression.
But I really think that the vocabulary used in WaniKani is very useful,
not only for advanced learners but also for beginners at some point.
It would just really devaluate the whole thing if it would be blown up to accommodate too much basic Japanese.

I came to realize that you can never know enough vocabulary, in the end it is the most important part of Japanese. If there would be a way to learn vocabulary easily like WankiKani I would definitely pay for it, making Anki deks is very tiring and it also does not work very well because you don’t need to type in the answer.

In my first Japanese lesson I couldn’t say much except 残酷 (because of watching Neon Genesis Evangelion) and the reaction of the teacher was very funny.
But it does not matter, recently 15 years later I finally heard that word in a TV drama, so it was not for nothing after all and you don’t forget the vocabulary you learned in WaniKani anymore I think.

(If your girlfriend is Japanese it is better not to believe everything unquestioned she says about studying Japanese)

That’s absolutely hilarious.

But yeah, I think you can get pretty far in any language with a wide vocabulary and basic grammar so vocab is easily the most important thing to learn.

Actually, if you use Anki on the computer, there’s a lot of decks where you type in the answer! [Vocab] WaniKani Expansion Pack v1.0 - 1/13/2016 - Now on Memrise!

This is the one I’m using and it totally has that feature. It’s not as good as WaniKani, as it doesn’t give you any leeway in terms of spelling or variations (you can add those in yourself though) but if you’re diligent with yourself it shouldn’t matter too much.

Thank you!!!
Now I have to rewrite everything…

Oh decks, that means I cannot create my own?

You can create your own deck but that takes time, so if there’s an option I think it’s more worth it to use a deck someone else has already made–if cards come up that you’ve already learned you can just suspend them pretty easily.

I was just looking at the stats for it (on jpdb) and they make it seem fairly difficult, but then again stats like these don’t tell you anything about how common the words used are

That also tells you nothing about the grammar or the structure of the book haha, he’s right in that stats are only useful up to a point.

Also, uh, correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe Shinsekai Yori is considered a light novel? (Actually I specifically brought it up because it’s supposed to similar to Lord of the Rings in terms of style and complexity)

Sorry, but may I ask you how you are able to get this stats for the book you are reading?
I checked the webpage and it looks very useful, but I cannot imagine how you can import a whole book…

This explains why it’s listed as a light novel, the website only has light novels as far as novels go, I guess it assumes that weebs wouldn’t read proper novels, but since it’s an extremely good anime someone put it on there.

I imagine it would be pretty bothersome importing a whole book yourself, I’m just using the site to look at the prebuilt decks / statistics

It looks very interesting, I did not know it at all.

Does this mean you are choosing eg a novel that has a prebuilt deck, read it and learn the vocabulary like eg instead of using Anki?

I only found this site a couple of weeks ago and am currently not reading anything, so so far all I have done is look at different statistics for popular series, sorry  I’ve actually been thinking of doing what you’re mentioning, but with Koohi.cafe - I’m not sure how the two sites stack up against eachother

And if you like the format, but not the content, you can just add new stuff with the content you want and just use the deck’s card templates. A lot of the decks out there even have things built in that make it easy to add new cards from content you’re enjoying outside of Anki. It’s how many of them were built in the first place. Figuring out how to use them can be tricky, though.

Thanks for the review mate! The part about the supplementary vocab deck is so exciting! I can’t wait to test it out. Looking foward to knowing enough to slog through my first LN.
