i agree with this and just to add to it l found it was more fun and quicker (because of the addictive game-ification of apps) to learn basic grammar from an app ( i used Busuu)
Thought it might be a good mini-goal to set since I didn’t know what or where to find anything to read for total beginner otherwise.
Do you know a good resource for graded readers? I’m doing WaniKani again and working through an N5-N4 Tango deck so I get exposure to full sentences and some more common vocab, but I would like to get some more natural reading practice with longer passages as well.
I did both. I speedran Wanikani in under a year when I first started, then I unburned everything and reset and did it again in a little under three years.
I think 70-80% is what I typically averaged at high levels on my second time through as well.
Taking the title of the thread at face value:
9226 items (radical + kanji + vocabulary)
365 * 3 = 1095 days
9226 items / 1095 days = 8.4 items/day
So if you’re doing 10 lessons a day (on average), you’ll make it. Arbitrary “levels” notwithstanding.
(2 years would be 12.6 lessons/day)
plan is to do 15 a day so long as “apprentice” is under 200 (so long as I have any to pick from ofc)
The 3y wasn’t some exact thing, but just more a way to show that I will have a goal, and it’s not to rush to it, but make sure I properly understand what I do before picking on more stuff.
When I started this thread I had around 250 stuff in apprentice, so it took me a bit before even starting to add on more lessons.
If I get done in 2y time, nice.
If not, then just go my own pace ![]()
Yeah I think it’s good to have a rough estimate to keep the motivation up. I think your plan is good. Also, many people don’t even get to 60 and it’s not because they quit Japanese (necessarily). It’s because when you combine wanikani with native content reading and listening, you reach a point where you just fly out of the nest and leave it all behind.
Can almost guarantee you’ll be fine in both regards. 15 a day probably won’t be enough to exhaust the queue before more become unlocked. And 15 a day should result in about 60 in apprentice with NO failures, I’d think you’d be hard pressed to fail enough to get it to 200. I think you’d have to be below 50% accuracy to achieve that. Good luck!
Honestly I’m half cheating in this regard, as in, I leave out just enough kanji to not level up while I focus on the vocab.
And then I do the vocab until there is roughly 20 left before I start the final kanji, this is to make sure I do not get overwhelmed by stuff.
Sadly this is exactly what I had for a while, and still miss on some of the older words / kanji that come back cause I do not have a proper mnemonics for it. Or subconsciously speed up and don’t fully look at it but just type in what my brain says it should (meaning, I see it fast, but don’t check details to make sure I actually know difference)
But ye, that’s a miss on my end, can’t really fault anyone other than myself xD
But that’s also why I’ve made the rule to myself to keep it to below 200 at all times, the preferred one would be below 100, but that’s a bit far off for me atm, so I keep it to 200.
Well, that took longer than I had planned, but oh well, got some burned ones while I was at it ![]()
And yes, still on the same level, I just decided to power through every single lesson before heading for next level, (I might have planned it a bit poorly since now I have 2 days with no more lessons, but I guess that’s some time to lower apprentice some more to prepare for the next level xD)
Congrats!
730 Guru, that’s rough. I’m predicting 200-ish reviews a day for a while, but it should taper off after a couple of weeks.
I’m happy so long as they stay in the Guru and not Apprentice ngl. Having em come up once a week is a lot easier to handle than them showing up daily.
Sadly I got a few from Enlightened that got pushed down. But it is what it is.
@peterA
Update, I’m about to be through Level 29 - it’s the first one I’ve done entirely letting the “today’s lessons” feature choose, no interference from me. (Also no interference from wanikani content movements suddenly giving me new lessons from earlier levels)
Will be 10 days at 15 lessons a day. Which, surprises me that it’s the same I was getting at 20 lessons a day on my own (but finishing all the vocab before starting the next level). We’ll see if it keeps up that pace through the next level.
Edit: And now that I think of it, it seems obvious. There are about 150 items (151 in 29, 153 in 30, if I eyeballed it right). As long as I don’t have to wait on unlocks and it doesn’t let vocab get in the way of “enough” kanji, it SHOULD be 10 or 11 days. Which is what it seemed to do, give me just enough kanji per day and fill the rest of the daily lessons with vocab. Nice, I like it.
