The game is a lot of fun, this should be getting alot more attention and the octopus boss is hilarious, though I’ve notice their presence is a bit different depending on the screen ratio (unless it changes?). My sloppy typos have come back to haunt me . Would be fun to make it voice activated…were you going apply the game to kanji or vocab too? The new N3 artwork and animation is pretty special, wow!
There are plans to apply the minigame to vocab/kanji reviews as well yes! Not sure when it will be,… but the octopus is getting hungry.
Thanks for the lovely comments
The octopus always slides in and takes up 30% of the screen, which can be smaller on mobile phones

N4 Grammar SRS Start!
Quick but sweet announcement today, we’ve started releasing N4 Grammar SRS items! Just like before, we aim to release a new batch of 10 grammar lessons worth of items (about 15-30 grammar points per batch) every week until we complete the Grammar SRS homework items for the Region.
We’re getting closer and closer to our Grammar Lesson releases, after which we’ll be able to release adventure levels with their corresponding Grammar SRS homework
Speaking of getting closer, nearly all items in N4 now also have a breakdown in our Grammar Library. So if you need a quick refresher, we gotchu!
@evandcs tagging you here so we don’t cluster the other thread
In comparison to Wanikani, Marumori is more customized indeed. A lot of features that need a script on WK are native to MM. For example, the ability to redo your answers.
Marumori does not have the Core 10k deck specifically (Kitsun does!). However, the approach that we’re going with soon on Marumori is to release more up-to-date lists of frequently used vocabulary. Say Fantasy top 5k, or Slice of Life 5k @neicul will be able to confirm this better, but this phase should be coming after we release more and more vocabulary lists of light novels/anime/manga, etc. This way, those lists will be more accurate.
Yep! We currently have about 4000 Light Novel Study Lists, but the plan is to keep on expanding and then releasing frequency lists per media type (e.g. light novels vs anime), per genre (e.g. fantasy vs sci-fi) and an overall frequency list.
The general idea is that we keep on iterating on these whenever we add more series/books/etc as those might change the rankings
Development Updates Roundup and Upcoming Features
Hello! In this changelog entry, I’ll be rounding up all the new features and bug fixes we’ve released over the past month. Development has been going smoothly and we’ve released multiple new features and fixed many bugs. Let’s get into it!
New Features
-
Home & Study List Dashboard - Upcoming Reviews - Maru now remembers your timeline view preference (24h or 7d view).
-
Dictionary - SRS Stats now have a different styling.
-
Home - We’ve shuffled the layout around a bit for multiple smaller resolutions. We now also display some previously desktop-only components on those resolutions.
-
Grammar Lessons - The share button now opens a modal that lets you copy the link or post directly to whichever social media you prefer.
-
Study Lists - Manage Items - Added a total count and advanced search filters to the page for easier item management:
- SRS Lessons & Reviews - Rank up/down toast notifications have been added so you can immediately see the new level of the review you just completed:
-
Premade Study Lists - Now shows an “already added” text element instead of a “Get” button when you already have the study list in your account.
-
Study Streaks - You can now get achievements and badges for keeping up your streak!
-
Dictionary - Vocabulary & Kanji pages - You can now demote (the item’s SRS level) straight from the details page of an item.
-
Study Lists - Manage Items - You can now hold shift and click to select multiple items at once. Just select a start item, start holding shift, and click the end item and it will select all those items including the ones in between.
Bug Fixes
-
Statistics - Updated the total Grammar Lesson counts for existing regions because we added more Grammar Lessons in our region rework.
-
Home - Fixed the island card artwork being too big at certain resolutions.
-
Comments - Fixed an issue where comments would show up empty when typing a list of items (like a bullet list).
-
Grammar Lessons - Example sentences now align properly again.
-
Dictionary - Vocabulary - SRS Stats now update properly when switching to a different vocabulary form.
-
Dictionary - SRS Stats - No longer visible for unlearned items.
-
Manage Items - Shift-clicking to select multiple items now properly triggers suspend/unsuspend button changes depending on what is selected.
-
Native Study Lists - Fixed an issue where it would say “0 series” when switching from another tab.
-
Kana Minigame - Fixed position and functionality of the back button.
-
Statistics - Fixed a bug where your longest streak would be 1 higher than it should be.
-
SRS Reviews - Clicking “keep siblings together” could cause a lock-up of the page due to an error happening. This has been fixed.
-
Grammar Lessons - Fixed an issue where some paragraphs would sometimes get rendered multiple times.
-
Friends System - Clicking on your own profile in the leaderboard now properly links to your own page.
-
Dictionary - Vocabulary Details - Community Stories now also properly update when switching to a different vocabulary form.
-
Dictionary - The search input now properly trims whitespace.
-
Home - Fixed Exp sometimes being at 100% due to a rounding error.
-
Grammar SRS - Fixed an issue where the “Unscramble First” and “Fill in the blank first” reorder settings would be ignored.
-
Vocabulary SRS - Audio should now properly autoplay for all kana-only words (including katakana).
-
Profile - Fixed an issue where profile pages would not be public.
-
Grammar SRS - Fixed an issue where the title would sometimes go off-screen on mobile if it was too long.
Pfew! That was quite a bunch! But wait, there’s more!
Coming Up
In other news, we’re still releasing new N4 Grammar SRS items every week (typically on Friday) and are currently working on a few new things. Content-wise we’re working on creating a nice buffer for N3 and we plan to start releasing N3 adventure levels from the first week of January!
This also means that if we can keep up with this schedule, the Grammar SRS will catch up to our N3 adventure drops at the end of January. This means we’ll be able to start releasing them in tandem with the new grammar lessons from then on! It will also free up a lot of time for our content team to spend on other things, like Mock Exams
Development-wise, we’re working on a few things:
-
Reworking the Main Study Lists for everyone on our backend. Our current system isn’t scaling that well, so we’re going to make it so everyone uses the complete adventure study list you can currently get from the premade section, but with locked items showing up as locked (and unlockable straight from the manage items page too).
-
The MM Browser Extension. I’ve started work on a browser extension and got an initial prototype up and running! If you are familiar with Yomichan, it works pretty similar to that extension, but with our MM dictionary and lets you add items to your study lists immediately. It’s looking pretty promising, so I hope to shed some more light on this one soon!
-
New landing (marketing) pages. Our current landing page is very outdated and we’re working on replacing it.
-
Wanikani Import/Sync. We’re adding a way for you to mark kanji and vocabulary learned on WK as known on MaruMori, so that they will not show up in your lessons or reviews.
The Annual MM and Kitsun Lifetime Sale has begun!
Hey all! I just wanted to let you all know that our annual lifetime sale has begun on both MaruMori and Kitsun. This means that you can get lifetime accounts on both platforms individually for a great price, and that you can get them both bundled together for an even better price!
Be sure to look at https://marumori.io/billing if you are interested in getting MM or the bundle.
If you wish to get just Kitsun, check out https://kitsun.io/payment for that.
As for MM, we will start rolling out N3 grammar lessons, reading exercises, and unlock batches from January 2nd. We’ll be catching up with N3 content for our Grammar SRS very soon too, so now is a great time to hop on the MM train if you were waiting for more advanced-level content
Hope you all have a great holiday!
Everytime I see a sale in this thread I’m clicking on the links to check the price before deciding if it’s worth for me or not, but… everytime I’m greeted by a login page or an introduction of MaruMori instead of a pricing page, so I’m always closing the tab and not re-opening it again.
Couldn’t it be possible to make the pricing page available without an account? Or at least details the pricing in this post instead of only posting links to it. I don’t want to create an account without checking if the pricing is within what I expect of it or not. If I’m creating an account, try it and take a liking to it, it will just be too sad if I later think that the pricing is too high.
Have a nice holiday too also. From what I read, MaruMori & Kitsun seem great.
Definitely think they should do that, but if you need the info:
Marumori/Combo offer
Kitsun
(I don’t believe they do regional pricing, so should be valid everywhere)
Thanks for the screenshots! That’s what I was looking for
Hey! I see that @araigoshi has already helped you out with some screenshots (thanks!!), but just wanted to mention that we are aware of this and it’s due to the links taking you to the actual purchase pages, which require you to be logged in to purchase anything.
However, we are working on a nice sale page that explains what MM/Kitsun is and lists the discount price, as I can imagine it being a tad bit annoying to not be able to view the information right away
We are also reworking our general landing pages, which will include a pricing section too, so that it’s immediately clear how much the service costs
So while it won’t help you right now in that regard, we are definitely aware and working on it ^^
P.S. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!
I wanted to give maru mori a try but couldn’t really take the time to explore as the duration was limited. So just a suggestion on whether you might want to make a few areas free for folks to be able to try?
I found wanikani’s 3 levels free without duration limitation to be a great model.
Hey! Thanks for wanting to give MM a shot Appreciate the feedback!
We actually do have free content, regardless of trial state:
During your 14 days trial, you get access to the complete PRE-N5 region, the first 10 levels of each other region, a daily “credit” for unlocking any grammar lesson/reading exercise of your choice (so could be much further in the region) and full access to all other features like SRS, minigames and exercises/tools.
After those 14 days, your access is limited, but you can still check out the first 5 levels per region.
If you wish to get a new trial to explore a bit more, feel free to let me know your username and I’ll add it for you (This goes for anyone else reading this too ^^)
Thanks - somehow my mind stuck on the 14 days. Great to hear there are other options so I wil give it a try!
Awesome, hope you have a blast
Let us know how it goes!
New Grammar SRS Batch & Upcoming Content & Features
Hey all! Hope you had/have a great holiday!
Here’s a quick update to let you know we’ve just published the usual Grammar SRS batch for N4 and to tell you about some upcoming features. This Grammar SRS release brings us over the halfway point for N4 (we’re up to Grammar Lesson #60 now, out of 110 total in N4), all according to schedule!
Meanwhile, our content team has been working hard to create a nice buffer of N3 Adventure levels for the start of our upcoming N3 releases (just a few more days!!). Things are going swimmingly over there as well, so we’re right on track for that January 2nd release!
Development-wise, we’ve also been working on a whole bunch of things, including a Public API (initial version nearly done), Satori Reader Syncing, Quick Study Mode (nearly done), WaniKani Known Vocab/Kanji Import (nearly done), and a Browser Extension, among other things.
Having the Public API live will not only be the foundation for many of these newer things, like the browser extension, satori reader sync, and MPV plugin. But also open up MM for third-party app/web/script development. Devs could create their own extensions, plugins, and even apps connecting with MM to easily add vocab/kanji from anywhere, create alternative ways to do your lessons and reviews, or extract (more) statistics from your studying.
So needless to say we are very excited for what the near future brings, and we hope you are too! Wishing you all a very wonderful 2024!
P.S. If you are a dev, and you have ideas for projects involving the MM API, be sure to let us know on Discord, as we are still looking into exactly which endpoints we wish to include in our first Public API version.
